People sometimes mistakenly call the jabberwock 'the jabberwocky' (with a Y), possibly because of the name of the poem.

Apart from having 'eyes of flame' and 'jaws that bite and claws that catch', Carroll gives no indication as to what the Jabberwock looks like. But we know that he liked Tenniel's illustration of it very much, as he originally wanted to use it as the frontispiece to Through the Looking Glass, but decided against it as he though it might be too scary and deter readers from his book.

Tenniel's Jabberwock is a hideous scaly creature with huge talons, a serpentine neck, blank eyes and bat's wings, who appears to be wearing a waistcoat.

Lewis Carroll doesn't tell us what sort of creature the Jabberwock is. He doesn't say that it is a bird, but he doesn't say that it isn't.

He says it has 'jaws that bite and claws that catch', it whiffles through the wood with 'eyes of flame' and that it has a head, which is chopped off, but while none of these factors tells us just what the Jabberwock is, that it might be a bird is not ruled out.
