Barter and trade, in fact this method is still practiced. For example if you were a good hunter and came to town with some extra pelts you could trade those to someone had a farm and was looking to trade some extra vegetables and fruits

People paid with what they had. For instance, in recent times, doctors in rural areas accepted payment of chickens, potatoes or other produce or time in exchange for services such as delivering a baby or setting a broken bone. This is called bartering. Most societies have had some form of money since you cannot always buy what you need by bartering. My thought is that you would not know the seller of the goods you want as the population grew. You wanted something of common value to exchange.
