It was believed that Martha and Mary Magdalene (Mary of Bethany) were sisters by pope Gregory I's Homily 33, in which he stated that the Magdalene was both sister of Martha, and the unnamed sinner who anoints Jesus. Yet, Martha's sister is referred to as Mary of Bethany in the Gospel of Luke. In 1969, the Catholic Church officially declared Mary Magdalene, Mary of Bethany, and the unnamed sinner as 3 different women. According to the new Catholic denomination, Mary Magdalene and Martha are not sisters.
