Most Muslims favored Abu Bakr, his father-in-law and a great financial support during earlier hard times, but some liked his son-in-law, Ali. The former group were the "Path" or traditionalists, the latter Ali's "partisans."

Ali did eventually become the Deputy, or Caliph, but he was killed shortly thereafter (he was the Fourth Caliph; numbers Two and Three had also been murdered) and the split was never healed. Severe members of both sects consider their opposite numbers "nonmuslims."
