History:
In both the classical Greek and Koine, the Greek noun stau‧ros′ (often translated 'cross' in some Bible translations) carries no thought of a "cross" made of two timbers. It actually means only an upright stake, pale, pile, or pole, as might be used for a fence or stockade.
Douglas' New Bible Dictionary says: "The Greek word for 'cross' (stauros; verb stauroo . . . ) means primarily an upright stake or beam, and secondarily a stake used as an instrument for punishment and execution."(1985 under "Cross," page 253)

Another term used to refer to the torture instrument upon which Jesus was nailed, is the Greek word xy′lon, which means simply "wood". Xy′lon also occurs in the Greek Septuagint at Ezra 6:11, where it speaks of a single beam or timber on which a lawbreaker was to be impaled.(Ac 5:30; 10:39; 13:29; Ga 3:13; 1Pe 2:24)

Greek scholar Vine mentions that the two-piece cross was of Chaldean origin, (long before the coming of Christ), and was adopted from the pagans by Christendom in the third century C.E. as a symbol of Christ's impalement.-Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words, 1981, Vol. 1, p. 256.
A more accurate description of the implement on which Christ was killed, then, would be a "torture stake,"on which he was "impaled,"( or fastened on a stake, or pole). So the thought of one man like Simon of Cyrene bearing a torture stake, as the Scriptures say, is perfectly reasonable, for if it was 15 cm (6 in.) in diameter and 3.5 m (11 ft) long, it probably weighed little more than 45 kg (100 lb).-Mr 15:21.

It's a thought provoking question, but I think the one who REALLY needs to think about it is the Questioner ! It really does imply that Jesus knew his fate... manifestly He did not. But the question does suggest an alternative view.... Not one that many will share though methinx.

It's too large for us to understand! It's still growing today! What happened on the cross is unmeasurable! If you are speaking physicaly, then I don't think the measurements are there, but spiratualy, it grows until the last one.......

Never talk about the cross being religious. Never talk that Christianity is a religion. True Christianity is a relationship with Jesus Christ. It doesn't matter the size of the cross, but your heart to Christ.

The size of the cross is not mentioned in the bible. However, Romans typically used a "T" shaped cross topping out at 9-12 feet (3-4 meters) above ground level. The cross piece is about 6 feet (2 meters) across.
