His only name was "John" - people in those days didn;t have surnames as we have. This is why Jesus was known as "Jesus of Galilee" - that sort of identity was the only way to distinguish one person from another with the same name. Note of several people are identified as "the son of...", again another way of distinguishing people - and the origin of modern surnames such as Johnson, Jackson, Peterson, etc.
