What was the second sin in the bible?

The second sin committed by man was the sin of envy. Cain coveted God’s favor of Abel and this led to the murder of his brother.

That depends on what depth you want to go into the subject. Do you want to discuss man's first experience in sinning... or Satan's. Because Jesus reveals to us that Satan is the "FATHER" or "originator or progenitor" of sin, long before man came into existence:

"...He was a murderer from the beginning and has always hated the Truth [God's Word - John 17:17]. There is no Truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the FATHER OF LIES." (John 8:44 NLT New Living Translation)

Just for the record... the biblical definition of "sin" is: "... Sin is the transgression of the Law." (I John 3:4)

The "Law" in question is the "Ten Commandments" as Paul explains in Romans 7:7: "Well then, am I suggesting that the Law of God is evil? Of course not! The Law is not sinful, but it was the Law that SHOWED ME MY SIN. I would never have known that COVETING is wrong if the Law had not said, "Do not covet." (NLT)

And what Law of God says: "Do not covet?" Of course, it's one of the "Ten Commandments." So, the Law that is transgressed [or broken], that defines what sin is, is the Ten Commandments.

Too many folks tend to discuss "sin" without a clue as to "what it is they are doing that qualifies as sin." Most people don't know what they need to "stop doing" in order to "stop sinning!"

And here is where the question of "sin" starts getting "deep." For the first sin to occur [man's or Satan's]... THE TEN COMMANDMENTS HAD TO BE IN EXISTENCE! Which is a statement with which much of modern professing Christianity takes issue: their religious take on it, being that the Ten Commandments didn't exist until Moses.

The Truth of the matter is that the Ten Commandments were only "written down" at the time of Moses. SIN, on the other hand, occurred millennia before his birth. So, by biblical definition -- the Ten Commandments existed FOREVER... or at least as long as God has existed [which according to His revealed Word is forever].

If you want to discuss Satan's "second sin" [transgression]... we'd need to know what his "first transgression" of God's Law was.

The same is true if the question begs to know what mankind's "second transgression against God's Law" was.

In point of fact, however, the answer may very well be that BOTH instances of the "first sin" [Satan's and man's] was probably the same one: COVETING! LUSTING after something that's not yours to have!

Satan, first, because he is the father of sin [breaking God's Commandments]. Although, he, like all the rest of God's created angels, was created "perfectly," as only God can do. He eventually corrupted himself by his own perfection:

"You were blameless in all you did from the day you were created until the day evil was found in you. Your great wealth filled you with violence, and YOU SINNED..." (Ezek.28:15-16 NLT).

Lucifer [Satan] came to covet God's throne and Sovereign Authority over all the universe [everything that is]! And he wanted it all for himself. He wanted [and still wants] TO BE GOD! Something that was and is not his to be or have:

"For you said to yourself, 'I will ascend to heaven [it is Satan who wants to "GO TO HEAVEN!" And it's his heart's desire of "going to heaven" that he has instilled in the beliefs of the false religions of the world] and set my throne above God's stars [God's angels - see Rev.1:20]... I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most High.' " (Isa.14:13-14 NLT)

So, Satan coveted God's Authority over all the universe -- his "first sin."

And it was the great Dragon... ["...that old Serpent, called the Devil, and Satan..." - Rev.12:9] in the Garden of Eden who awoke LUST in mankind; beginning with the woman! Telling her that that thing [whatever fruit it was] that they were forbidden to have... would make them "wise" -- as wise as God Himself.

But even if "coveting" was the "first sin" of Satan and mankind as this contributor deduces; the "second sin" becomes a moot point. Because God's Word also tells us:

"...the person [or angel] who keeps all of the Laws except one is as guilty as the person who has broken all of God's Laws... So if you murder someone, you have broken the entire Law, even if you do not commit adultery. So whenever you speak, or whatever you do, remember that you will be Judged by the Law of Love [the Ten Commandments], the Law that set you free." (James 2:10-12 NLT)

With the breaking of ONE of God's Commandments, the transgressor is subject to the Law's penalty; death. And any transgression after that [the second, third, fourth, etc] doesn't matter or detract from the first transgression.

In the end, all that matters is: ARE YOU SORRY FOR HAVING DISOBEYED GOD'S LAWS? And "do you want His Mercy and Forgiveness... through Christ's shed blood... that you might begin to learn Live by His Perfect example, and learn to Love with His selfless Love?"

Jesus Christ didn't come to "count our sins." He came to offer mankind an opportunity to "be rid of them" through Faith in Him and obedience to Him and His Commandments of Love. To be delivered from the clutches of this world's god man chose in the beginning to worship and emulate: the "father of sin." He came to "purchase" us back from our servitude to that god... that we might begin to "serve Him": the King of the soon-coming Government of God on the earth [see Isa.9:6-7]. And to learn to "serve one another."

"For there will be no Mercy for you if you have not been Merciful to others. But if you have been Merciful, then God's Mercy toward you will win out over His Judgment against you." (James 2:13 NLT)

It's not in mankind's best interest to be keeping track of his sins; first, second, third, etc.. All of mankind is guilty by virtue of the first transgression. Any transgression after that is pointless.

It would be best to keep our eyes on Christ's selfless example of His Love toward us: His Grace and His Mercy. To learn to Love and Live His way... and not give in to transgression.
