There is nothing specific given in The Bible regarding the ages of the disciples. Traditionally, John is thought to be the youngest, perhaps only 16 - 20 years at the time of the crucifixion. Many articles and books repeat the statement that John was youngest, but it would be impossible to support the conjecture.

Answer

Actually, contrary to the above, there are at least four pieces of strong evidence that suggest John was very young at the time he was a disciple of Jesus.

First, the gospel attributed to him was written, scholars believe, at the latter part of the first century or first part of the second,. Even if John was merely the source and not the actual writer (as some scholars suggest) this still means that he would have been old when the gospel was produced - and too old if he was already middle aged at the time of Jesus. So it is therefore likely that he was a teenager when a disciple or he would have been dead long before the end of the first century.

Second, the gospels record an incident where the mother of John and his brother James canvasses Jesus about the place of her boys in Jesus' kingdom. This pushiness of a Jewish mother would never have happened if James and John were mature adults.

Third, both James and John were nicknamed 'the sons of thunder' - an apt nale for a pair of beligerent teenagers.

and finally, and more compelling, is the call of James and John to be disciples. We read that Jesus called them from their father Zebedee's boat - Zebedee was a fisherman. Therefore, if James and John were older men, Zebedee would be much older, and, in an era where life expectancy beyong 45 was a raritythis would mean that Zebedee would not be fit enough to be out in a fishing boat. Therefore Zebedee must, himself, have been a relatively young, fit man, and his sons James and John must, therefore, have been appropriately much younger - probably in their teens.
