Then that is a nautical star used on naval and maritime maps. Back in the day it meant the wearer had some attachment to the sea. be it job, pleasure or hobby. The nautical stars were used to mark ports on the map items of special interest and so on.

Another Meaning of five pointed star - Pentagram I have always heard that the founders of America chose the five pointed star because it is a symbol of the Biblical prophecy of Isaiah 9:6 and that the star represented the star that shown over Bethlehem at Christmas. The five points of the star that the wise-men followed had the meaning that the Messiah would be:

Also, the five pointed star can represent the the Human Being as a whole. The top point of the star that points up represents the soul or the head of the being or the Spritual Realm. The other points are the limbs of the Human being.

..Also, in paganism,wicca and a few other spiritual-identities/nature-based spiritualities, the Five Pointed Star represents the The Five Sacred Things/Elements. Fire, Water, Earth, Air, and Spirit. The "Spirit" points upwards toward the Divine Cosmos. Also, interestingly enough the 4 other sacred things, or elements can correspond to the 4 directions as well. East, South, West and North.

If your talking about gangs, a five point star is represented for the Bloods and the Latin Kings. In the Chicago area the five point star is represented for all of the gangs on the "people" side(Latin Kings is one of them) and a six point star is represented for all the "folks".
