In broad terms, the most common religion is Christianity (claimed by the majority of the population - 70.6% as of 2014).

According to a 2012 review by the National Council of Churches, the five largest Christian denominations were:

  • The Roman Catholic church with 68,202,492 US members
  • The Southern Baptist Convention with 16,136,044 US members
  • The United Methodist Church with 7,679,850 US members
  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with 6,157,238 US members
  • The Church of God in Christ with 5,499,875 US members
Obviously from among these groups, the Catholic church is the most common.
