Medium answer: we can't know for sure how many people lived before we settled down and started using agriculture, but at that time (around 10,000 years ago) there were 5 million of us. In 1 AD there were 300 million, and in 1850 there were 1.2 billion. There are now 6 billion.

If you assume that the rate of population growth over the last ten thousand years has held steady, then you can estimate how many people lived in the generations between now and our earliest ancestors in 50,000 BC.
