Overflow for Two's Complement when:

- the operands have the same sign and the result differs from them in sign

or

- the carry-in and carry-out associated with the left-most position differ

arithmetic overflow is a situation that occurs when a calculation or operation yields a result that is too large for the system storage or register to handle. Overflow can also refer to the amount the result exceeds the memory designated for storage. ( basically too much, That's why its called overflow)

The carry flag indicates that an arithmetic operation between two numbers resulted in an unsigned carry or borrow. The overflow flag indicates that an arithmetic operation between two numbers resulted in an unexpected change in sign, i.e. an overflow.

Carry is also like overflow. The difference is in interpretation. Do you consider the numbers signed or unsigned? Its all in interpretation because the hardware logic needed to add two numbers works the same, no matter if they are considered signed or unsigned.

Both flags are set or cleared together, so you can use whichever you wish.

In the 8086/8088, the overflow flag is set when the result of an arithmetic instruction exceeds the bounds of the signed representation of a number. This is not the same as the carry flag, which is used for the unsigned representation. Both flags get set as needed. You decide which one to pay attention to.

An overflow occurs when you attempt a mathematical operation that results in a number that cannot be stored in the variable type you are using.

C# projects only check for overflows if you have explicitly configured the project to do so (because it slighly slows down your application). To do this, you have to go into the Project Properties page, Build tab, click Advanced, and then choose "Check for arithmetic overflow/underflow"

If you set this option, then this code, which attempts to add 1 to a integer that is already at the maximum value that the 32-bit integer type can hold, would cause an overflow:

int a = int.MaxValue;

a++;

A overflow is a condition in which a calculation produces a unit of data too large to be stored in the location alloted to it. An overlow cannot happen when two numbers of opposite sign are added. An overflow may occur in an addition of binary numbers if the augend and addend are both positive or negative.

Overflow in two's complement numbers occurs when the result of an arithmetic operation exceeds the range that can be represented by the given number of bits. This can cause the number to "wrap around" and appear as a negative value. For example, if adding two positive numbers results in a value greater than the maximum positive value that can be represented, the number will overflow and be interpreted as a negative value.

saturation arithmetic eliminates limit cycle due to overflow, but it causes undesirable signal distortion due to the non linearity of the clipper.In order to limit the amount of non linear distortion , it is important to scale the input signal and the unit sample response between the input and any internal summing node in the system such that overflow becomes a rare event.

To determine if your tub is leaking from the overflow drain, fill the tub with water and observe if the water level rises above the overflow drain. If water is leaking from the overflow drain while the tub is filled, then it is likely that the tub is leaking from the overflow drain.

A gas tank can indeed overflow if it is not full. A gas tank can overflow if the pressure inside of it is too high.

After an ADD instruction, the flags affected typically include the Zero Flag (ZF), which is set if the result is zero; the Sign Flag (SF), which indicates the sign of the result; the Carry Flag (CF), which is set if there is a carry out of the most significant bit; and the Overflow Flag (OF), which is set if there is an overflow in signed arithmetic. Additionally, the Parity Flag (PF) may also be affected, depending on the result's parity.
