There are conflicting stories for the cause of Secretariat's laminitis. Some say obesity, others Cushings, and still others theorize the constant pounding of racing on his hooves may have been the cause. Access to his necropsy report may clear things up but until then we can only speculatel.

I do not know if they actually saved some of Secretariats sperm. However, as of this date, Thoroughbred mares must be live covered by a stallion and therefore Secretariats sperm would not be of use. The Thoroughbred industry consistantly has many superstar and quality stallions to choose from. While Secretariat was possibly the greatest racehorse of all time, and a wonderful sire, the Thoroughbred industry continues to move forward, which is a good thing. It would not be beneficial for any breed to have a million offspring from one sire.

Yes, once. The movie was full of inaccuracies, like omitting Secretariat's stablemate, Riva Ridge, who the year before won the Derby and Belmont, therefore it was he, not Secretariat, that saved Meadow Stable. Also, it shows Lucien being at the birth of Secretariat, he wasn't. Neither was Penny or her son.
Overall, however, it was fair, but still a lukewarm tribute to the greatest thoroughbred that ever raced.

No. He was put down on 10/4/1989 (he was born on 3/10/1970). He had developed "laminitis" - the same condition that killed Barbaro.
Sorry.
No, Secretariat (Big Red) was euthanized on October 4th, 1989 to spare him of the pain inflicted from being diagnosed with Laminitis, an equine foot disease. He was 19.
He may have died at the age of 19 but still here in 2011he is still the only horse that has won the Triple Crown since 25 years before Secatariat

In the Belmont, In the stretch, Secretariat opened a 1/16 mile lead on the rest of the field. At the finish, he won by 31 length, the fastest 1½ miles on dirt in history, 2:24 flat, which broke the stakes record by more than 2 seconds. This works out to a speed of 37.5 mph for his entire performance. Secretariat's world record still stands, and in fact, no other horse has ever broken 2:25 for 1½ miles on dirt.
