Shoes have been worn for centuries by nearly every culture. History has seen many types and styles, which have influenced the styles and trends. Most trendy styles that become popular stay on the market for 1-10 years, but styles considered to be timeless are always available. Shoes are made of various materials, usually leather, rubber, cloth or plastic, intended to be worn on the feet. Every shoe contains a sole and a device or surrounding material to secure it to the foot. Shoes are secured to the foot by straps, casings or fitted designs that adhere to the contours of the foot.

Fashion shoes are created with appearance considered before comfort; those that are made for both are usually very expensive. Shoes are designed around a model's foot, but because each person's foot is different, one fashion shoe may fit one person perfectly and fit another person in a way that causes blisters. Usually fashion shoes have an attractive design, pattern or material. Most fashion shoe designs have an elevated heel. Fashion shoes range from very cheap to very expensive.

Designer shoes are either fashion or comfort shoes that are made by a famous designer. Because of their popular name, designers sell these shoes for high prices, but the quality is higher than most other brands. Special expensive materials, hand-crafting and unique looks are often the selling points of famous designer footwear.
