The massacre at Wounded Knee occurred on December 29, 1890. The 23rd President of the United States was in office at that time. His name was Benjamin Harrison.

No, on both accounts. Wounded Knee was in 1890, several other battles were fought up till 1918. Also, many Native Americans still carry on this war today, only the war today is fought through legal battles (there is a movement to push Genocide and Montevideo violations before the UN Court, either of those would remove the USA's claim to the lands it took by treaty)

On December 29, 1890 the Battle of Wounded Knee or Wounded Knee Massacre took place. At least 150 Lakota were killed in the battle and 51 were left wounded, some of which died later due to the injuries. Of the soldiers, 25 died and 39 were wounded and 6 of the wounded died later. This battle was a major part of the war between Native Americans and the U.S. Troops.

Initially after the massacre, General Miles heard rumors at Pine Ridge. These tellings of the events of Wounded Knee relayed by Indians, Indian-scouts, soldiers and white citizens, told of the horrifying massacre induced by the Sioux. Citizens at Pine Ridge knew that Sioux Warriors (Men), women and children all had been slaughtered like pigs, with no consideration to their humanity. The 7th Calvary had done it, without question, under the command of Colonel Forsyth.

After this had become public, General Miles, opened up his own special inquiry, though he was commanded to just gather the facts (no speak of them) and report back to his superiors about the conduct of the 7th Calvary.

In the end, after a congressional inquiry, Colonel Forsyth would be cleared of any wrong-doing and returned back to his command by President Harrison. Miles will be discredited and interested only in a personal vedette against Forsyth. The army would be chastised for making a bad judgement in placing the line of army soldiers in a crossfire position--though, no soldier was killed by friendly-fire.

The truth of Wounded Knee would simply pass into legend. Before thirty days was passed few people would remember what truly occurred at Wounded Knee or the Drexel Mission.

The person who authorized and commanded the Massacre was US 7th Cavalry commander Colonel (later Brigadier General) James Forsyth. The initial detachment of troops was commanded by Major Samuel Whitside. The massacre occurred when the cavalry attempted to disarm the Lakota Sioux. When fighting broke out, the multi-barrel cannons of the cavalry support group fired into the camp, and some troopers chased and killed escaping Sioux.

A deaf tribe member of the Sioux tribe didn't understand that the US 7th Calvary wanted to disarm them so he thought that they were trying to harm him and he refused to give up his weapon so the Calvary fired and that got the war started
