John uses this expression right before he visits the high tech world Bernard and Lenina come from. I believe that it tells John's innocence before he witnesses the 'new world'.

Linda was originally from the World State, while John was raised there by her, making them outsiders in the savage society. The five castes, Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon, distinguish each other based on several factors.

First and foremost, each caste wears a different color. Alphas wear gray, Betas wear mulberry, Gammas wear green, Deltas wear khaki, and Epsilons wear black.

Also, lower castes are given less oxygen as developing infants, making members of lower castes shorter, and in the case of the Deltas and Epsilons, more physically misshapen and stupid. It is because of these mental shortcomings that lower castes do factory work and upper castes hold jobs such as Directors, Psychiatrists, and Songsters.

The deity in "Brave New World" is known as Ford, based on the industrialist Henry Ford. He is worshipped as a symbol of scientific progress and efficiency in the society depicted in the novel.

Throughout the book, John has very strong morals, including his refusal of ever taking soma. But the night before he kills himself, he participates in the orgy that's started by the paparazi surrounding him, and he takes soma and celebrates, and fits in, going against all his morals. He wakes up the next morning more guilty than he ever has been, so he hangs himself.

John the Savage (a man that lived on the "reservation" meant for those who lived apart from the new world much compared to the reservations used for Native Americans today) struggles to integrate into the society of the New World. Not only with society, but with relationships as well (i.e. Lenina). He evidently fails to relinquish his old ways especially after talking to Mustapha Mond, one of the ten World Controllers, about his struggles regarding the presence of God and philosophical and scientific intellect, and hangs himself as the only respite from the horrors that he experiences.

To encourage people to purchase as much as they can, which will keep the economy running smoothly and the money cycling. This is also why in the hypnopaedia messages, the government encourages people to never mend their clothes, but just throw them out and buy new ones.
