Butterflies and Moths

To many people they are indistinguishable. There is a difference and this is the place to satisfy you curiosity. Both are class Insecta but the butterfly has a longer smoother antenna and tends to be more colorful. With 165,000 known species, there is room for lots of questions in here.

Will butterflies lay eggs on clothing that is hung outside?

Not intentionally... Butterflies normally lay eggs on or around their host plants, and no butterfly larve feeds on clothing. I'm sure it would be possible for a butterfly to drop an egg or two on clothing, but that would not be a normal occurrence.

What is the normal butterfly wingspan?

It depends upon the species of hummingbird.

A Ruby-throated hummingbird would have a wingspan of 3-4 inches.

The smallest, a Bee Hummingbird is about 2.5 inches.

The largest, a Giant Hummingbird is about 8.5 inches.

The average seems to be about 4 inches

What happens if you eat a moth alive?

Depends on the moth. There are over 142,000 different species.

Some countries actually deep fry bugs and insects such as moths and are a local delicacy.

However, these are edible moths.

Some moth species can be very harmful if consumed. Dead or alive.

For example:

  • Daniid Moths are very poisonous, if consumed you will suffer a slow and agonising death.
  • Zebra Longwing Moths actually have cyanide in their bodies. Cyanide is extremely lethal to mammals such as humans.
  • Burnet Moths also have cyanide in their bodies.
  • Emperor Moths have a very powerful anti-coagulant chemical. If consumed they can cause excessive bleeding if you cut yourself. Because your blood cannot clot the cut, you'll bleed to death.
  • Scarlet-Bodied Wasp-Moths contains an alkaloid poison.
  • Tiger Moth contains small traces of poison that, if it doesn't kill you, will cause stomach upsets for weeks.
  • And so on

There are many, many "do not eat" species of moths. So, really, you're better off not eating a moth at all unless you're an expert in the field of insects. Which I doubt you are if you asked this question.

If you really want to eat a moth, do some research into specialist restaurants or holiday destinations that serve fried moth.

What does a argonomist study?

What does it mean if a hummingbird flies around you?

It means that the hummingbird has chosen you as its protector because of your superior moral character. You must catch the hummingbird, pet it, kiss it, and keep it from evil for as long as you live. However, if the hummingbird should die before you, or you did not catch and kiss it, you will be doomed to a cursed life.

What is called preservation of butterflies?

Butterfly conservation is an umbrella term describing the work of a variety of organizations worldwide that seek to assist in research, species recovery efforts, and public education toward the goal of preserving at-risk butterfly species in the wild. Such organizations exist in many countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States. Often these groups work in conjunction with other organizations, including nonprofits, scientific institutions, and national agencies.

Endangered or imperiled butterflies face a variety of threats. The problems facing butterfly populations can include the reduction of breeding or habitation sites because of deforestation, development, or natural disasters. Other factors that threaten some varieties of butterfliesinclude pesticide use, non-native predators, diseases, and loss of plant species that typically host butterfly larvae. Butterfly conservation efforts seek to lessen the impact of these threats on specific butterfly species.

An effective species recovery plan requires detailed information about the needs of specific butterfly populations. For some species, sufficient amounts of data are not yet available for the creation of a thorough recovery plan. Some butterfly conservation organizations seek to help fill in the information gaps by providing support for the gathering of research data on specific types of at-risk butterflies.

Do moths sting you?

There is at least one spitting moth, which I have been unable to identify by name. I have it in a speciment jar, for inspection. At approximately 10.00 p.m., 13 July 2009, i tspat a grey milky cloud of droplets over my wife. The droplets did not irritate, or seem toxic in any way. The circumatnces of the spitting were that the moth had flown into our dining room and had gone directly to the ceiling lights. It seem to react aggressively to my wife's attempt to shoo" it back out the door. I used a fairly large polythene container to trap it, using the bulk of the box to defend against further sprays. I have it now in a glass jar. Evry time I approach it it becomes very agitated. The colouration is plain pale grey/brown, with a central rear russet triangle to the upper side of the wings. The lower side is also plain with a ragged dark grey transverse line running from wing edge to wing edge at the rear of the wings. The dimensions are: wingspan, extended, approximately 20-25mm. Length approx. 15-20mm.

If a moth's wing is broken, there isn't much that can be done to repair it. Insects rely heavily on their wings for survival, so a broken wing can greatly impact their ability to fly and find food. Why do butterflies bleed when they hatch from their chrysalis?

When butterflies hatch from their chrysalis, they need to pump fluid into their wings to allow them to expand and dry properly. This fluid leakage is a normal part of the butterfly's post-emergence process.
