Cleopatra actually had no impact whatsoever on history. She is known for the misconceptions and myths that have grown up around her. In reality she was the last queen of a corrupt and crumbling dynasty. She had no army to speak of and her only resource was Egypt's wealth and her own personality. She used her charm and her personality to flatter and make friends with the two most powerful Romans of her time in her bid to keep Egypt free and independent. She lost, committed suicide and that's where her story ends. The rest is all myth and fantasy.

Her presences in Alexandria and her liaison with Caesar caused the Alexandrian War. Her alliance with Marc Antony caused the final civil war of the republic.

Caesar was more amused by Cleopatra than admiring. What Caesar did admire was the city of Alexandria. There was even a rumor that he was either going to turn Rome into another Alexandria or move the capitol there.

Unfortunately, today Cleopatra is remembered as a seductive temptress. Her struggles, determination and political acumen are at best glossed over in the popular mind. Although historians have tried to present a balanced view of her, the damage done to her reputation by various ancient writers, playwrights, novelists and Hollywood is the image that people remember.

Technically Cleopatra began her reign in 51 BC upon the death of her father. However it was intended to be a co-rule between her and her brother Ptolemy XIII. They struggled for power with each one trying to push the other out. Cleopatra was exiled, and it was not until 47 BC, when Caesar arrived that Cleopatra was firmly established on the throne. Due to the power struggle events, Cleopatra did not have a solid grip on the throne until 47 BC.
