Continents and Regions

Most colonies were located on the continents of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. European countries established colonies in these regions for various reasons including access to resources, economic benefit, and expansion of their empires.

The largest continent is Asia with an area of 44,580,000 km2. The smallest continent is Australia with an area of 7,620,000 km2. Asia is almost six times the size of Australia.

A cape is a pointed piece of land that extends into a body of water, while a continent is a large, continuous landmass. Capes are usually smaller and can be found along coastlines, while continents are much larger and make up the primary divisions of land on Earth.
