How do you keep squirrels away from fig trees?

With a 12 gauge shotgun!!!!!

No, that is cruel.

Just put moth balls in knee high stockings and tie to various places around the tree, and also put a few at the base of the tree. They hate the smell and will not go near the tree. Also, bugs hate the smell too, so it is great for fruit trees as well.

Bob A

Mothballs are not safe to handle. You don't see them anymore because they have been found to cause cancer. Avoid the darn things.

Is it safe for parrots to eat fig newtons?

Human baked treats like fig newtons, cake, cookies, etc. have too much sugar for a parrot. If you have accidentally fed fig newtons to your parrot, and your parrot liked it, you can substitute more healthful treats that are similar. Look for dried fruit treats at your pet supply store or in online stores like Fosters Smith (see related link). Make sure that these are the kind specifically made for pets. Dried fruit treats for people, like you find in the grocery store, usually have added sugar or preservatives that could make your bird sick. You can make a bird-safe newton-like treat by carefully slicing a piece of plain whole wheat toast partway so it makes a pocket (like a pita pocket) and stuffing dried fruit inside. This turns the treat into a foraging toy with a fruit surprise inside. As with all treats, make sure it is an appropriate size for your bird and doesn't displace too much of your bird's regular food.

How dos the strangler figs adapt to live in the rainforest?

Strangler figs adapt to rainforest environments by starting their life as epiphytes, germinating in the canopy of larger trees where they receive ample sunlight. As they grow, their roots descend to the ground, encircling and eventually strangling the host tree, which provides support and resources. This growth strategy allows them to compete effectively for light and nutrients while thriving in the dense, competitive ecosystem of the rainforest. Additionally, their fleshy fruits attract various animals, aiding in seed dispersal and ensuring their propagation throughout the forest.

Are figs suitable for vegetarians?

Yes, a fig is the fruit of a fig tree; that makes it 100 percent suitable for vegetarians.

-----

Not necessarily. Figs are pollinated by wasps and some die inside and don't make it out. Although the fig ultimately dissolves the wasp within, there is still a dead female wasp inside and so some vegetarians would consider that eating a dead animal. There is no way to "wash" the insect off the fig.

How tall do fig trees get?

Figs do not require a large garden space. They may be grown in a container, such as the patio containers found in regular garden stores. This approach is actually encouraged for colder climates so that the tree may be moved indoors during the colder months.

Can fig trees grow in northern Indiana zone 4?

Yes, we grow fig trees in Huntington, IN. My brother-in-law grows fig trees in Rockford, IL. The trick seems to be wintering the trees. We dig them up half way around the roots and lay them down on the ground. Then we trim all the leaves and remaining figs off the trees. Next, we place an old throwrug over the top of the entire tree. We place bricks around the rug's edges to keep it in place and to protect the tree from winter wind. Lastly, we place mulch rather high over all the rug.

In the spring after the last frost, we bring the trees back to a standing position, fill in any depression made from digging it up in the fall, then give it water, and wait until we can harvest the figs. I hope this helps

Fig leaves which are NOT poisonous are good for balancing blood sugar( Type 1 and 2 Diabetes), reducing cholesterol and stimulating blood circulation. An x con named Martha Stewart uses them to wrap 4 ounces of wild Alaskan salmon after drizzling them with olive oil; coarse salt and fresh ground black pepper. I believe she bakes them for 8 minutes at 300 degrees. Fresh fig leaves imbue what you wrap inside it with a toasted coconut flavor and wonderful moisture. How do you increase fig fruit yield?

Fig trees are members of the genus group of trees known as Ficus. There are two types of fig trees: the caprifig and the edible fig. Caprifig trees are all male and their fruit is inedible. There are three varieties of edible fig trees. The Smyrna variety of fig tree requires pollination to occur before it can produce fruit. If not pollinated the fruit will drop to the ground before maturing. The San Pedro variety of fig tree needs pollination for its main crop when planted in some locations. The most popular type of edible fig tree planted is the common fig variety which includes, Brown Turkey figs, Celeste figs, Black Mission figs and Brunswick figs. Common figs do not need pollination to set crops and are therefore the easiest for homeowners to grow and care for. Fig tree types are further divided by the color of the fruit. There are green/yellow varieties and dark varieties. Fig trees are easy to grow in warm climates. They need to be planted in an area where they will receive full sun, at least eight hours a day. They should be spaced at least ten feet apart from other trees. The average fig tree will grow to be ten feet tall and ten feet wide. Fig trees have a cold hardiness temperature of ten to twenty degrees Fahrenheit. If planted in the north it is recommended that they be kept in containers that can be brought indoors during the winter. Be extra careful in watering a container kept plant as they tend to dry out more rapidly. Depending on how far north you are, covering them with burlap may suffice. When planting a young fig tree, be sure to place it in the hole with the top of the root ball at ground level. Use rich soil with at least 1/3 humus mixed in. After replacing the soil, mound up additional soil to form a water basin. Water the tree thoroughly and then cover the area with mulch. Newly planted fig trees must be kept well watered until they have become completely established. After that they should only need to be watered in times of drought. Avoid over watering as a soggy plant will cause the fruit to split. Fertilize the tree every spring just before the new growth begins. It is not recommended to start a fig tree from seed. Purchasing them at your local gardening center or propagating them is the better choice. Fig trees are easy to propagate because they root easily. The easiest way to do this is to take leafless cuttings that are about six inches long and the width of a pencil in early spring. Put your cuttings into good quality potting soil in a pot that is lined with newspaper. Stand the pot in a warm, bright area and cover the cuttings with empty two liter containers that have had their bottoms cut off. Do not water the pot again until it is extremely dry. In time you will see leaves growing and the cuttings will form roots. Wait until the new fig tree has a complete root system before hardening off. To harden off, you need to bring it outside for several hours a day making sure to bring it back inside at night. Do this for at least two weeks until it is acclimated to the new climate. After the young tree is hardened off you can transplant it outside.

How does one store fresh figs?

Keep ripe figs in the refrigerator, where they will stay fresh for about two days. Because they have a delicate nature and can easily bruise, store them on a paper towel-lined plate or shallow container, and cover or wrap them that they do not dry out, get crushed or pick up odors from other foods. Keep slightly under-ripe figs on a plate at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Dried figs will stay fresh for several months if you keep them well wrapped in a cool, dark place or in the refrigerator.
