How often should fire extinguishers be tested and examined?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

NFPA code requires hydrostatic testing of CO2 and other stored pressure extinguishers at no more than 12 year intervals. Because they are also required to be internally inspected every 5 years, some agencies do hydrostatic at 10 year intervals.

How many fire extinguishers should be in a 5000 square foot building?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It depends on the extinguisher rating. Let's say its rating is 13A.

Multiply the floor area (5000) by .065 and divide that by the rating (13, here).

5000*.065=325

325/13=25 extinguishers

If they are 21A extinguishers, then:

5000*.065=325

325/21=15.48 -> 16 extinguishers (always round up)

If it's just a math question ignore the rest.

If it's a serious question, and not just a mathematical one, then it should be noted that if there are multiple floors those numbers could change. Also, normal fire extinguishers are (some number)A (these are for solid flammables such as wood, paper, textiles......). if they are B instead (the tag on the extinguisher will say and these are for liquids) then the calculation is different.

Go to any fire department and ask a firefighter. They're sure to know the answer (or will at least have quick, easy access to the answers).

Is discharging a fire extinguisher a misdemeanor of a felony?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This will vary depending on your state laws. In my state, to damage someone else's fire fighting equipment is a very serious misdemeanor, and can get you 12 months in jail. Same thing applies to pulling a fire alarm when there is no fire.

Was the fire extinguisher invented in 1872?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, not really. A patent issued that year was entitled "Fire Extinguisher", issued to one Thomas J. Martin, but it was related exclusively to a systems of pressurized pipes installed in buildings for operating sprinklers (or for other purposes).

Such an invention clearly has no relevance to any "portable fire extinguisher", or any other self-contained fire extinguisher, portable or not.

Why do you have fire extinguishers in schools hospitals etc?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Portable fire extinguishers are provided in case there is a small fire that can be quickly extinguished, while occupants are being moved away from the fire and out of the building, if necessary.

Some fire extinguishers are automatic, such as those used in commercial grease-duct hoods over cooking appliances, and activate to stop the fire even if nobody is there. Others are manual and may come in different types for different fires (e.g., A, B, C, D, K).

How does dry cleaning work?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Dry Cleaning is a process that cleans clothes without water. The cleaning fluid that is used is a liquid - most commonly perchlorethylene(perc). All garments are immersed and cleaned in a liquid solvent -- the fact that there is no water is why the process is called "dry." The process involves using a dry to dry machine like a home washer and dryer both in one machine. The garments are put in the machine's basket, immersed in the solvent. The solvent passes over and in the basket cleaning the garments within, several cycles, passing through filteration devices built into the machine, and then the basket rotates fast extracting all the solvents back into the machine's tank or the distillation device. Then the basket rotates while heat is injected into the sytem, causing the solvent to evaporate reaching the top of the machine where a refrigeration coil is situated. When the hot solvent vepor hits the very cold refrigerated coil, it recondenses (like how rain is made) back into the sytem passing through a water separator removing any ambient moisture that had been transfered from dry garments into the solvent that they were cleaned with. This process of drying takes 20-30 minutes, and the garments are returned to a clean dry but usually wrinkly state. This is the end of the cleaning process. from here the garments are moved to the pressing stations, where the wrinkles are removed, and fabric is pressed to a level of perfection varied by the dry cleaner involved. What do dry chemical fire extinguishers do to a fire?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Fire needs three things to burn: fuel, oxygen, and heat. Take away one or more of those three things in sufficient quantities, and the fire can no longer burn.

.

A dry chemical fire extinguisher sprays a noncombustible, air resistant layer of foam designed to cover the fire's fuel source. When the fuel source (wood, oil, cloth, etc.) is completely and properly smothered, the expelled dry chemical foam isolates the fuel from the surrounding air, and thereby starves the fire of the oxygen it needs to burn.

How does carbon dioxide in the fire extinguisher cylinder work?

User Avatar

Carbon dioxide works by temporarily excluding oxygen from the fire. Good for class B fires, poor for class A fires because as soon as it dissipates, the hot material can reignite.

What does put out the fire while it's still small mean?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It means that if the fire is very little, it can be put out with little effort. The same can be true about any problem. Don't put off taking care of them or they will be a real problem later on.
For example, if a kid is thinking about trying weed, his parents need to sit down and talk to him and explain things (the small fire).
If they don't, he may end up dealing and using some heavy drugs (big fire) and the whole family will be in for a rough time.
