Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are used in homes, schools, businesses and boats as a way to put out a small fire. Fire extinguishers come in many types for different purposes, including portable or fixed systems. This category relates to the science, origins, operation, selection and standards for fire extinguishers.

What type of fire extinguisher is the best to douse an electrical fire?

Class C - it will be indicated with a blue circle. It uses a dry chemical to put out the flames.

These types of extinguisher are often found as BC or ABC-class extinguishers, which work on any of the listed class of fires.

Do NOT use a Class A extinguisher on an energized electrical fire. First turn of the electricity, if that is the only extinguisher you have.

How does dry cleaning work?

Dry Cleaning is a process that cleans clothes without water. The cleaning fluid that is used is a liquid - most commonly perchlorethylene(perc). All garments are immersed and cleaned in a liquid solvent -- the fact that there is no water is why the process is called "dry." The process involves using a dry to dry machine like a home washer and dryer both in one machine. The garments are put in the machine's basket, immersed in the solvent. The solvent passes over and in the basket cleaning the garments within, several cycles, passing through filteration devices built into the machine, and then the basket rotates fast extracting all the solvents back into the machine's tank or the distillation device. Then the basket rotates while heat is injected into the sytem, causing the solvent to evaporate reaching the top of the machine where a refrigeration coil is situated. When the hot solvent vepor hits the very cold refrigerated coil, it recondenses (like how rain is made) back into the sytem passing through a water separator removing any ambient moisture that had been transfered from dry garments into the solvent that they were cleaned with. This process of drying takes 20-30 minutes, and the garments are returned to a clean dry but usually wrinkly state. This is the end of the cleaning process. from here the garments are moved to the pressing stations, where the wrinkles are removed, and fabric is pressed to a level of perfection varied by the dry cleaner involved. Can you fight a fire with liquid helium?

If you have enough liquid helium, it might smother the fire or cool the combusting materials that are supporting the fire so much that they are below their kindling temperature. However, this would be a very impractical fire fighting technique compared with using solid or liquid carbon dioxide, because carbon dioxide gas is denser than air while helium gas is much less dense than air. Furthermore, liquid helium is expensive and only rarely if ever available when one needs to fight a fire!

Note that the boiling point of helium is 4.22 K, −268.93 °C, −452.07 °F. From a practical standpoint it would be nearly impossible to maintain such extreme cryogenic conditions anywhere in the vicinity of a fire!

What are two common fire extinguishers that are ineffective on alkali metal fires?

Water and carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are ineffective on alkali metal fires because they can react violently with alkali metals, such as sodium or potassium, and actually make the fire worse. It is recommended to use a Class D fire extinguisher specifically designed for metal fires in this case.

What is hydrocarbon fire extinguisher?

A hydrocarbon fire extinguisher is a type of fire extinguisher specifically designed to combat fires fueled by flammable liquids such as gasoline, oils, and grease. These extinguishers contain agents like dry powder or foam that work by smothering the fire and cutting off the oxygen supply to extinguish the flames.

Is class 1 fire rating the same as 1 hour fire resistance?

In short, No - in the UK "Class 1" is a form of performance that indicates how easily something burns ('Class 4" being the worst).

Fire resistance on the other hand is a term that relates to a construction's ability to resist the passage of fire (e.g. a wall, floor, door etc).

The fact that a material is "Class 1" doesn't necessarily have any bearing on its fire resistance performance. For example, PVC cladding can be obtained to a 'Class 1' rating, but it wouldn't contribute much to the wall's fire resistance performance at all.

What should be used to put out a fire in person's hair or clothing?

A person's hair fire should be smothered by using a heavy material like a coat or a blanket, or by using a fire extinguisher if available. If a person's clothing is on fire, they should stop, drop to the ground, cover their face, and roll to smother the flames.

2000 hyundia elantra not getting fire i put on a new coil crankshaft position senor put on a used e.c.m. still no fire?

If you have plenty of crank, but, no, fire, then your problem is in the fuel system. Check your fuel pump by disconnecting the lower fuel line on the filter and then try starting the car. If no fuel comes out of the line, you have found your problem! Bad fuel pump!

Is fire extinguishing foam corrosive?

Yes.

Firefighting foam is normally used in diluted form - 1-6% foam and 94-99% water, depending on the application. This reduces its corrosive effects, but the pure agent can be quite damaging to equipment over time.

Eg: On the Antarctic FD (Mcmurdo Station, Antarctica) we bought 4 new air rescue firefighting vehicles in 2005 which we filled with a non-freezing undiluted foam/antifreeze mix. When we attempted to use the vehicles for the first time in 2007, the brass fittings on the foam lines blew apart in several places as soon as they were charged, rendering the truck useless. This was due to corrosion by the foam agent, which had leaked past the check valves and filled the foam lines for an extended time.

What chemical is used to destroy a wasp's nest?

I don't know what chemical is in wasp killer if that is what you are asking. I know that diatomaceous earth works well on nests that are in the ground. The wasps cannot get through it without dying.
There is a safer wasp killing spray. I think it is Concern brand.

What is monex dry powder?

Monex Dry Powder is a precious metal powder used for investment purposes or in the production of various industrial products. It is produced through a unique refining process that results in a high-purity form of the metal. Investors often purchase Monex Dry Powder as a way to diversify their portfolios and hedge against economic uncertainties.

Which type of hominin was the first to use fire?

Homo erectus was the first to use fire. It took millions of years to discover fire. It was discovered when lightning burnt something. The people from the homo erectus clans then started making it with sticks and stones looking out for little sparks. This technique is still used today by some people and others use our improved technology.Like Handy Man, hominids in the Upright Man group were toolmakers. But with their larger brains, they were able to invent more complex tools, including strong hand-axes made of stone. Upright Man's greatest advantage was the ability to use fire. Anthropologists have found burned animal bones in the same places as Upright Man remains. This clue means that Upright Man probably used fire to cook animal meat.Scientists aren't sure whether these hominids were hunters or wheher they found dead animals to eat.

Is it optional to use the empty extinguisher in resident evil code veronica x?

No, using the empty extinguisher is necessary in order to progress through the game. It is used to obtain the full extinguisher by combining it with the fire hose nozzle.

Why carbon di oxide fire extinguisher not used for calcium carbide fire?

Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are not recommended for calcium carbide fires because calcium carbide reacts violently with water, producing acetylene gas. When a carbon dioxide extinguisher is used, it can displace oxygen and potentially build up the concentration of acetylene gas, which can lead to a more hazardous situation. It is safer to use dry powder extinguishers or other specialized extinguishing agents for calcium carbide fires.
