To "draw lots" is a method to decide who gets to go first or who wins. Many times a lot is drawn by offering equal lengths of sticks or toothpicks to each participant, with one being shorter. To do that, all sticks are held in the hand with all tops at the same height, hand hiding which stick is shorter.

Then each participant picks (draws) a stick from the hand. Whoever draws the shorter stick - wins.
