While he may not be any more than average intelligence, he is a A-list star with average looks in movies so he was smart enough to guide his career in that direction and do something almost impossible for someone not fitting the classic idea of beauty by Hollywood standards. I think he is also smart enough to realize the roles he can't play and makes the most of the one's he gets.
