Yes, Manhattan is an island so you have to go over a bridge or in a tunnel to get there. Common entrance points are the George Washington Bridge, the Lincoln Tunnel, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Queensboro Bridge.

Not sure you can get a bus from Manhattan to White Plains. Get to 125th and Lexington in Manhattan and then catch the Metro North to White Plains.

The East River is a tidal strait. It's a strait in that it is a "water passage" between Manhattan and Long Island. Because of tides, it appears to flow like a river. It's not an actual river because it connects on both ends to the ocean. Rivers flow from inland fresh water sources (such as mountain runoff or springs). The Hudson River, on Manhattan's West side, is a true river. It flows downstream from the North. Accordingly, the East River is salt water, the Hudson is fresh water. The East River is not an estuary, though--an estuary is the point of mingling of a river and the ocean. The mouth of the Hudson, though, while perhaps technically forming an estuary, flows around various islands and is channeled to the point that the distinction isn't worth making, as long as you ignore Spuyten Duyvil. You could say the East River is associated with an estuary, but it isn't one itself. One other thing: while the Hudson River does carry fresh water from upstate, the salt water from the Atlantic mingles upstream as far as Poughkeepsie, depending on tides, so it's pretty salty when it hits Manhattan.

You can take the subway to JFK. You take the A train to the Howard Beach Station, or the E or the J-Z to Sutphin Boulevard/Archer Avenue, then get the shuttle, called the AirTrain, which drops you off inside the JFK terminals.

LaGuardia is not accessible by subway, but there are MTA-NYCTA (Metro Transit Authority-New York City Transit Authority) buses that go there. NYCTA is the transit authority for New York City, and they are part of the MTA, which is the New York State transit authority.

Newark Airport is in New Jersey, so it obviously wouldn't be accessible by MTA-NYCTA transit (neither the subway nor the buses).

No restaurant that is considered kosher by Orthodox standards would be open on Rosh Hashanah because:
a) kosher resturants are not open on most Jewish holidays because it is forbidden to 'work' (this includes handling money, driving and working with electrical items)
b) all the Jewish staff would be in synagogue in Rosh Hashanah

If you want kosher food on Rosh Shanah, either pick it the day before (many resturants, delis have prepared food) or go to a kosher-style restaurant, one that serves traditional food but is certified kosher by a Rabbi. There are plenty of those from the Upper West Side to the Lower East Side. Plenty of supermarkets have similar food available as well.

These restaurants are considered strict glatt kosher by Orthodox standards and have a strict supervision of the largest organization called Orthodox Union (OU). For example: Talia's Steakhouse and Bar located on Amsterdam Avenue and 92nd (http:/www.taliassteakhouse.com) and Darna located at Columbus Avenue and 89th Street (http:/www.darnaNYC.com).These restaurants offer pre-paid, pre-cooked (before sunset) meals.

Manhattan is in New York. Midtown and the Upper East Side are in Manhattan. Midtown and the Upper East Side are neighborhoods in the borough of Manhattan. Manhattan is one of the five boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island). New York City is a city in New York State.

Manhattan is the long skinny island on the left side of the map. It looks sort of like a hand pointing its finger.

See the big light brown square in the center of Manhattan? That's Central Park. The Upper East Side is the neighborhood directly east (right) of Central Park. Central Park runs south to north from 59th to 110th Street, and is bordered by Central Park West to the west and Fifth Avenue to the East. The Upper East Side runs from 59th to 96th Street, from Fifth Avenue to the East River.

Midtown is the neighborhood directly below the Upper East Side. It's the East Side (6th or 5th Avenue to the East River), from 42nd Street to 59th Street.

It's important to note that neighborhoods in New York City usually do not have precise boundaries. The Upper East Side is one of the few neighborhoods that does have precise boundaries. It's also the largest neighborhood in Manhattan, along with the Upper West Side (which is on the left side of Central Park).

Many neighborhoods overlap with each other. For example, Harlem overlaps heavily with Morningside Heights (the neighborhood directly above the Upper West Side), and the Upper West Side overlaps with Morningside Heights. Another example is Koreatown, which overlaps with Chelsea.

Some neighborhoods are sort of sub-neighborhoods of each other (for example, Alphabet City is sort of a sub-neighborhood of the East Village, and in turn, the East Village is sort of a sub-neighborhood of the Lower East Side).

Strictly speaking, Midtown is the East Side of Manhattan (from 6th or 5th Avenue to the East River), from East 42nd Street to East 59th Street. But some people go by a broader definition of Midtown. Some people consider Midtown to be from 34th to 59th on the East Side, instead of 42nd to 59th. But East 34th Street to East 42nd Street is made up of three other neighborhoods (The Flatiron District, Murray Hill, and Kips Bay). By this definition of Midtown, The Flatiron District, Murray Hill, and Kips Bay are sub-neighborhoods of Midtown. That's what I meant by "strictly speaking."

You could also say that Midtown ranges further west, to 7th or even 8th Avenue. But that area is made up of the Theatre District and the Garment District. Again, by this definition, the Theatre District and the Garment District are merely sub-neighborhoods of Midtown.

Also, "Midtown" technically refers only to midtown Manhattan on the East Side (East 42nd Street to East 59th Street). On the west side, the area from West 42nd to West 59th is known as Hell's Kitchen (it's also often referred to by its new, sanitized name, "Clinton").

Even though the term "Midtown" refers only to the East Side, a lot of people say "Midtown" when they really mean Hell's Kitchen or Clinton (or, they might call it "Midtown West").

I was born at the Manhattan General Hospital in 1936. I believe it was located at 23rd St. and 2nd Avenue. I'm not sure how long it's been gone.

I too was born there, in 1945, and my father was born there in 1916. It became part of Beth Israel - another Wikipedia item says that was in 1964. It is now a condo or coop. Beth Israel sold it to developers in the 1980s or 1990s. My birth certificate, and my father's identify it as Manhattan Hospital, rather than Manhattan General.

Living in New York City, the geographical features that affect one the most are the rivers and the ocean. Brooklyn and Queens are on Long Island, Staten Island and Manhattan are literally islands. There always seems to be a bridge or tunnel involved in going anywhere which involves traffic, delays, and money for tolls.
