Is there more than one species of Osprey found in the U.S.?
The Osprey is the only species in its family. It's unique and quite unmistakeable when a person sees it up close. But just as an aside, there's something I find quite fascinating about the Osprey, and that's about their nests.
The nests are made of twigs, sticks and branches and lined with smaller twigs, moss, grasses, bark, fish bones, and some other materials. They will also reuse their nests year after year. Every year they continue to add sticks, which makes the nest ending up being absolutely huge. Their nests may be more than seven feet across and more than five feet deep.
What are the features of Osprey backpacks?
There are many great features to the the Osprey backpacks. There are a variety of options to choose from and each backpack has different features available to them. Some examples of these backpack features are airscape suspension, grip mesh coverings, weight reduction cutouts, and gender specific harness among many more features.
What is the contact telephone number for Osprey Publishing?

How ospreys and herons interact?
Ospreys and herons both live in the same environment, and some of them live in the Florida Everglades. Ospreys and herons both eat fish, so they might contend over the fish, and even battle to the death! I hope this helps.
How long does it take for an ospreys egg to hatch?
Our Osprey's at Osprey House Environmental centre in Dohles Rocks Queensland Australia, laid an egg on the 22nd and a second on the 25th May 2009 with one egg still active. We have been told that gestation is between 38 and 40 days, so here is hoping that we have a chick late June or early July.

osprey: type of bird founded in the Chesapeake bay
North American Range
The Osprey is a unique bird that is unmistakable when seen at close range. It is the only species in its family, and it is found worldwide. Its breast and belly are mostly white, with some dark streaks. The white extends out the wings, but the primaries, secondaries, and tail feathers are mottled black and white. The back is mostly black or dark brown. The head is distinctive with a white crest, a face bisected by a dark eye stripe, and yellow eyes. While there is much variation, the female tends to have a streakier breast than the male. The Osprey's talons are uniquely adapted for catching and carrying fish: their surfaces are rough, and their toes can be held with three forward and one back, or with two forward and two back, an arrangement seen in owls but not in other diurnal raptors. In flight, they are most often confused with gulls because of their long wings, which are bent at the wrist. However Ospreys have a bounce to their flight that gulls lack. Osprey are Birds of Prey which have a similar body structure as to hawks. Osprey eat:
- fish
- mice
- small insects
fish
Ospreys eat mainly live fish. Although they are not above eating any dead fish they come across, they are not scavengers. They occasionally also take other small prey such as snakes, rodents, other aquatic prey and even other birds.
What are facts about the osprey?
1. they live near bodies of water
2. they hunt mainly fish
3. their nests are made of seaweed, driftwood, and sticks.
4. they build their nests in the fork of trees, artificial platforms, utility poles, and platforms made for osprey nests
What is mostly likely to happen to an osprey with a broken wing?
If humans don't get involved it will most likely die to to the inability to hunt. If you see an animal that is injured or in distress contact your local DNR (Department of Natural Resources) representative by going to dnr.state."Your State Abbreviation Here".us or call your local animal control.
Avocets often feed by wading, head pointed downward, in shallow water, waving their heads (with bills partly open) from side to side. Small creatures are snapped up, or get caught in the filtering membranes within the bill. Having an upward curving bill lets the end of it be parallel to the ground when the bird is doing this. That way more area can be swept with each pass. A hockey stick is bent the same way for the same reason. The bill tapers to a fine point, too, to reduce drag in the mud. Hockey sticks don't need that adaptation.
Scientists have studied ospreys which migrate from Sweden to Africa. They can migrate 4,200 miles, travelling 162 miles a day on average. However, ospreys often take 'breaks' of up to a week while migrating.
