Is there an experiment to show how a boat floats using play dough?

Yes! I recently did this experiment with some students. It tests buoyancy.

So first, set up a fish tank with water, about 3/4 of the tank will be full.

Take a ball of playdough and drop it into the water.

Does it sink? Does it float? If it floats, it's called positive buoyancy, and it sinks, it's called negative buoyancy. If it neither floats nor sinks, it's called neutral buoyancy.

Then, take the playdough ball out of the water and flatten it into a boat-like shape.

Place it in the water?

Does it sink, float? Test it out with some kids, it's pretty cool, and a good way to teach them about buoyancy.

Intrigued, I looked it up. Since it is intended as a children's toy it is hardly likely to be toxic! This is from its manufacturer's web-site (Hasbro):

"The exact ingredients of PLAY-DOH compound are proprietary, so we cannot share them. .... it is primarily a mixture of water, salt and flour. It does NOT contain peanuts, peanut oil, or any milk byproducts. It DOES contain wheat. PLAY-DOH compound is not a food item and is not intended to be eaten.

PLAY-DOH compound is non-toxic, non-irritating & non-allergenic except as noted: Children who are allergic to wheat gluten may have an allergic reaction to this product. Also, due to the high salt content in PLAY-DOH compound, the product can be harmful to pets if ingested.

There is no MSDS sheet required for PLAY-DOH compound."

What was Play-Doh originally made for?

The substance that would come to be known as Play-Doh was originally sold by a company called Kutol as a wallpaper cleaner. But walls in the 1950s were a lot less sooty than they had been in 1912, when the company was founded—coal's popularity was declining, and sales of the wallpaper cleaner were slumping. Kay Zufall, a teacher who happened to be the sister-in-law of one of Kutol's big wigs, came up with the idea of letting kids play with the stuff, and it was a big hit. Play-Doh hit the toy market in 1956, and it's become a phenomenon, having sold 3 billion cans since that debut. It's so iconic it even got its own perfume.

How do you make play dough stick to paper?

You can't. The clay has too much oil in it and if you try to hang it the clay will slide off. It is also too heavy to stay hanging on the paper. Glue doesn't work with it either, I have tried it. You need to use something else. Something lighter.
