Scientific names are for a plant , name of popy plant is Papaver somniferum .

Sesame seeds are fine to eat for people who can get tested for drugs. Poppy seeds are a different story. FWIW, some agencies have raised the cutoff for opiates to 2000 ng/ml to eliminate poppy seed as a cause of a positive opiate screen.

(no, i am an experienced drug addict, and they don't test for the chemicals in pure poppyseeds, but one that is in heroin and stuff. but lots of heroin will cause you to fail, so don't do any before your test.)

Consuming poppy seeds prior to taking a drug test can and in most cases depending on how many you have consumed, will show a false positive for opiates. Opium latex can leech onto the seeds while the seeds are still contained in the plant. This causes a small amount opium to coat the seeds in the plant and if the seeds are not properly washed before being used in food, bingo, failed test.

No. The extremely small amount of opiates that can be obtained from poppy seeds is not likely to register on a drug screening. It is certainly possible for it to be detected, but the level is so low that it is known to be from such ingestion and not the actual use of opiate drugs.</

YES! I am an RN on a jobsite where we do frequent drug tests on the employees. When a coworker and I had some downtime we had this discussion. I had eaten ONE Landshire Roast Beef and Cheese sandwich with poppy seeds on the bun for lunch. I went ahead and did the urine drug screen on myself approximately 2 hours after eating the sandwich and the result was POSITIVE for opiates!!!My coworker verified the result. It was negative prior to eating the sandwich. This was a pretty standard instant drug test so the answer is a big YES! My coworker and I also watched the episode of Mythbusters on Youtube that questioned this same thing and the guys were both negative for opiates prior to eating the poppy seed cake/ bagels and were both positive for opiates approximately 18 hours after eating the poppy seeds

yes they do indeed. A new discovery in the medical field has shown us that there are trace amounts of THC in some yet not all poppy seeds. I am a med student studying in pharmaceutical field. Despite the many misconceptions saying otherwise i assure you (through years of research) it is proven that poppy seeds can contain THC.
