Pseudoephedrine and Phenylephrine (Sudafed)

Pseudoephedrine is a stimulant medication used to treat the symptoms of the common cold, sinusitis and nasal congestion. While pseudoephedrine appears in small doses in many popular, over-the-counter decongestants, the product is heavily regulated. Pseudoephedrine's chemical structure is very similar to that of amphetamine, making it a key component in some illegal drugs. Due to the tight regulations, Phenylephrine is often sold as an over the counter substitute.

Is phenylephrine toxic to dogs?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Phenylephrine HCl is a prescription drug not approved for use in animals by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but prescribed legally by veterinarians as an "extra-label drug" - the veterinary use of a drug in a manner for which it was not approved.

If you really feel that your dog needs this medication, I strongly suggest you talk to your vet first.

Is Sudafed better for post nasal drip?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Antihistamines such as Allergy medications (benadryl, zyrtec, cleratine, allegra, etc) do help temporarily by shutting down the mucus production.

I've had post nasal drip for over 5 years now, it makes you cough in the mornings and sometimes gets pretty uncomfortable. I use antihistamines however I pretty much would have to use it all the time lol

so I found that sinus flush have been working for me.

You go to Amazon, or to local pharmacy (cvs, wallgreens, even Walmart) and you buy either nasal irrigator or what I found works better nasal syringe.

You fill it with warm water, and slowly squeeze the water in one of your nostrils, (make sure it doesn't leak from the same nostril).

Squeeze the water slowly, you will feel as the water fills all your sinus cavities and after a couple seconds as you squeeze starts dripping from the other nostril -that's what you want because it means it reached all the sinuses and now flushes all the bacteria and mucus out.

Now there is that moment when the water goes up your nose to the sinuses, that moment sucks cuz always gives me a headache (it's the same feeling if water gets up your nose in the pool or lake), but when you get past that its ok (you can adjust your head tilt, I found that it depends on your head position).

Make sure the water comes out thru the other nostril....

As much as the allergy pills help you temporarily, you can use it as a adition to those.

I have been using it once a day or once every few days for about 5 minutes from one nostril to another, and so far don't have to take allergy pills at all, my sinus feels very clear and less dripy, no cough in the mornings either.

It didn't eliminate completely the nasal drip but reduced it so I don't notice that and no flem or the bacteria in there anymore cuz they all com out with the water....

So far it works well :)

Can you mix Sudafed and acrivastine?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is probably not a good idea, since theraflu typically contains another decongestant known as "phenylephrine." Combining the two decongestants could have harmful effects on blood pressure since they both constrict blood vessels.

I wouldn't take sudafed with theraflu. I would opt to go with either sudafed and Tylenol if a pain reliever therapy is preferred, or just taking theraflu.

Ive found phenylephrine to be a pretty effective decongestant, especially in the theraflu formulation

Can you take naproxen and sudafed together?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

For a short time in a reasonable dose.If you are generally healthy, you can take the recommended dosages of naproxen (Aleve) and aspirin together for a few days.

If you are prone to stomach, bleeding, or kidney problems, don't do it. But you probably know that already.

If you depend on low-dose aspirin for your heart health, ask your doctor. Naproxen can cancel out the benefits of the aspirin.

Do NOT take ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil) with aspirin. This is the NSAID that is implicated in most serious interactions with aspirin.

"

We, therefore, conclude that the metabolic interaction, although real, results in changes of such small magnitude as to be of no clinical significance.

Together?

You should NOT take aspirin and naproxen sodium simultaneously.

You can google on naproxen sodium side effects and get tons of info.

AnswerI wouldn't. If naproxen isn't solving the problem you might want to get some medical attention. That's some pretty strong stuff and it should take care of most minor pain and inflamation.

Can you take Vyvanse and Sudafed together?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Darvocet and Darvocet-N are both analgesics, mild to moderate pain relievers; Prednisone is a steroid, which decreases inflammation and promotes faster healing. You can take them together,...but, steroids are VERY irritating to the stomach lining, so best to take the Prednisone on top of a meal or at least with a glass of milk.

Can you take childrens Sudafed and Vyvanse?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I took 50mg of vyvanse and then 3 pills of sudafed (the ones with the actual pseudoephedrine in it). I was completely fine. I do not have ADHD or a cold, i was using both as stimulants/uppers/etc. It made me very hyper and jittery, but my friends were all hyper too so we just had a little hyper time.. haha. If you do have ADHD or a cold, then the effects will be different.

How many times did you buy Sudafed?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

according to federal law no more than 250 tablets within a 30 day period, but some states vary. Check with your local drugstore. I have severe allergies and have found some pharmacies police the use differently and had one of them sell me only 48 tablets instead of my requested 96 when my last purchase of 96 was 28 days prior. To avoid the hassle I now have my doctor write a RX for it which I refill as needed. During allergy season it is more often than when allergies are not bad.
