It depends on which method you use to determine the birthstone for Leo.
July 23-Aug. 22 is the Zodiac sign of Leo. The stone that is designated for this zodiac sign is Onyx.
However, if you are talking about birthstones, you have to go by the month: July's birthstone is Ruby, and August's stone is Peridot.
If you go by months - and Leo covers two months - you would then have to look for which month your birthdate falls under that is covered by the Leo sign. Once you do, you also can choose which list of birthstones to go for: Traditional, Modern, Mystical, or Ayurvedic.
The Traditional for July is: Ruby, Onyx
July in Modern, Mystical, and Ayurvedic: Ruby
If your birthdate falls in August, the Traditional for it is: Sardonyx, Carnelian
Modern for August: Peridot
Mystical for August: Diamond
Ayurvedic for August: Sapphire
Ruby has a hardness of 9 on Mohs scale of hardness . So any gemstone with hardness more than 9 would scratch a ruby and that includes, diamond, synthetic moizzanite and synthetic diamond.
Tanzanian ruby is ruby that is mined mostly around a small town called Winza in Tanzania. There have been many high quality stones discovered there of which the majority are completely natural, ie. free of heat treatment. There are some that rival the famous Burma Ruby. In the gem markets of today, Tanzania and Mozambique are now the main suppliers of fine quality Ruby.
Burma and Thailand Rubies are no longer commercially viable due to a lack of supply and an import embargo of Burma rubies into the American market.
It is OK, rubies are easy to make artificially as they are made out of Aluminium Oxide. However there is one particular gem mineral (Spinel) that looks like ruby and some of the world's most famous rubies are not rubies but Spinels. eg. the Black Prince's Ruby and the "Timur ruby" in the British Crown Jewels are in fact spinels.
The amount that uncut ruby's are worth varies great depending on several factors. The economy and the size of the ruby should be taken into consideration.
