Sand Dunes

Sand dunes are hills of sand formed by the movements of either wind or water. Dunes play an important role in protecting land against heavy waves from the sea, and occur both in coastal and dry areas.

465 Questions

How are sand dunes affected by weathering erosion and deposition?

The wind is a part of weathering, and the wind blows the sand dunes' top layers of sand around every day.

Why is one side of a dune different from another?

Because the wind blows the sand one way, not both.

One side of of a sand dune is different than the other side because each side is formed by a different element. If one side is formed by wind and the other side is formed by water, it is impossible for the two different sides to be identical.

First sentence correct; second, not so. Although water does deposit sand in dune-like ways, the question is about sand-dunes, formed only by the wind (which is not an "element" either; nor is water). Wind and water will not work as suggested. The simple answer is that as the sand ridge builds up the wind blowing over it eddies over the edge, dropping sand grains close to the lee slope.

Why aren't sand dunes stationary?

Sand dunes aren't stationary because its just a big mound of sand, and wind can blow away sand.

Was sand dunes formed by erosion or deposition?

sand dunes are caused by deposition . some people think its caused by erosion , but erosion is the braking down of land formations. sand dunes are caused by strong winds pushing sand grains into piles.

What Controls the Shape and Motion of Sand Dunes?

When wind carrying sand slows down or is trapped by some obstacle, such as a boulder or plant, the sand gets deposited. As the sand accumulates, a sand dune can form. Dunes often form on beaches or in deserts. Sand dunes move over time as, little by little, sand grains get moved by the wind from one side of the dune to the other.

Tell how snowdrifts and sand dunes are formed in similar ways. Then describe differences in how they are formed.?

Similar: Both are formed by wind.

Different: Sand dunes are formed by deposition. Snowdrifts are formed by weathering.

++

They are both formed by deposition of a granular material by the wind.

Weathering is totally different - it is the breakdown of rock (or other materials) by the weather, biological agents, etc. - though sand is a product of the weathering of rock.

How does sand movement move sand?

Wind or water erosion can cause the sand to move from one place to another. The wind carries it by picking it up (just like the same affect with pollen) and it drifts to somewhere new. Water smashes against the shoreline and breaks it apart. It can then carry it outward with the waves or back into the ocean.

All in all: WATER OR WIND EROSION

Can sand dunes move over time?

in the same direction as that the wind blows

What are the importance of sand dunes?

Their roots flow through the sand and keep the dune together, instead of just flowing apart and dispersing from the wind.

What and where are the biggest sand dunes in the world?

There are three contenders for the title of the world's highest sand dune, and it depends upon the context - whether one means the highest in actual sand dune size, or the highest above sea level.

According to some sources, the world's highest sand dune is the Cerro Blanco dune in the Sechura Desert, Nazca, Peru. However, according to the Namibian Ministry of Environment & Tourism, the highest dune in the world is called Big Daddy, or Dune 7, and is one of the Sossusvlei dunes in the Namib Desert. However, according to the website link below (Duneguide), the highest sand dune may well be the humble Mt Tempest on Moreton Island, just off the coast of southern Queensland, Australia. The second largest sand mass in the world, Mt Tempest reaches 280m above sea level, and it is all sand.

How do plants effect sand dunes?

Plants, such as trees and bushes, can stabilize a sand dune and slow or limited its growth and movement.

What other method can you use in order to protect your sand dunes and prevent them from eroding?

Imitating nature seems to be a great solution to this age-old problem... just plant grasses and small plants, and make sure that they get enough water. Dunes WITHOUT greenery move, and dunes WITH greenery stop moving...
