Why is a solar eclipse rare?

Total eclipses are considered rare events although they happen on average every 18 months somewhere in the world. The probability of one reoccurring in the same place is something like 370 years.

Was there a solar eclipse in 1671 over japan?

There was a partial eclipse on 3rd Sept 1671 in Japan.

What also must be true in order for you to observe a total solar eclipse?

The eclipse must occur during daytime at your location, you must be located within a few

tens of miles of the central path of the eclipse, the sky at your location must be clear at the

time of totality, and you must be awake and outside.

When was Eclipse foaled?

Eclipse was foaled on April 1, 1764.

What factors are involved in lunar eclipse and solar eclipse?

from wikipedia ('lunar eclipse':

The Moon does not completely disappear as it passes through the umbra because of the refraction of sunlight by the Earth's atmosphere into the shadow cone; if the Earth had no atmosphere, the Moon would be completely dark during an eclipse. The red colouring arises because sunlight reaching the Moon must pass through a long and dense layer of the Earth's atmosphere, where it is scattered. Shorter wavelengths are more likely to be scattered by the small particles, and so by the time the light has passed through the atmosphere, the longer wavelengths dominate. This resulting light we perceive as red. This is the same effect that causes sunsets and sunrises to turn the sky a reddish colour; an alternative way of considering the problem is to realise that, as viewed from the Moon, the Sun would appear to be setting (or rising) behind the Earth. The amount of refracted light depends on the amount of dust or clouds in the atmosphere; this also controls how much light is scattered. In general, the dustier the atmosphere, the more that other wavelengths of light will be removed (compared to red light), leaving the resulting light a deeper red colour. This causes the resulting coppery-red hue of the Moon to vary from one eclipse to the next. Volcanoes are notable for expelling large quantities of dust into the atmosphere, and a large eruption shortly before an eclipse can have a large effect on the resulting colour.

anytime you are looking at the moon, you're seeing a reflection, because the moon isn't emitting light. therefore, during a lunar eclipse or any other time you can see the moon from earth, reflection is occurring.

Why should you not hold knife during solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse is when the Moon covers the disk of the Sun - hence everything becomes dark, like a night. In the same way that you wouldn't do anything with a knife in the dark normally, you wouldn't want to risk cutting yourself during the time that the solar eclipse is taking place - you won't be able to see to fix it for about four minutes, after all.

I think the questioner is implying that holding a knife during a solar eclipse is a superstition in some cultures. Also, even during a total solar eclipse it never gets as dark as the middle of the night; there is still plenty of diffused light from the corona. It feels and looks like a few minutes after sunset.

Can a satellite send information in a solar eclipse?

Are you worried that the satellite won't get sunshine during a solar eclipse to power its solar panels ?

Any artificial satellite whose orbit is not directly over the earth's poles is already in darkness

for roughly half of every orbital revolution, 24/7. That's why every satellite has storage batteries,

to save it up when the sun is shining, and keep it going when it's not . . . a lot like your cellphone

or your cordless drill.

How do you know when a solar eclipse will happen?

Answer: By tracking the Earth and the moon's orbit allows scientists to predict total solar eclipses. Since they can follow the orbits of both the Earth and Moon, scientists can calculate the exact movement when the Sun, Earth and Moon will be in alignment.

Why is it unsafe to look at the sun during solar eclipse?

Your pupils dilate

You wouldn't look directly at the Sun; you naturally turn away and cover your eyes. As you turn to face the sunlight, the pupils of your eyes naturally close to minimize the glare.

In a Solar eclipse, the temptation is to look at the darkness in the sky, and the pupils of your eyes will dilate to let in more light. When the eclipse ends, your wide-open eyes are exposed suddenly to the full brilliance of the Sun, and your eyes cannot react quickly enough to avoid burning your retinas.

DO NOT watch a solar eclipse without proper eye protection.

When does a solar eclipse appear?

It depends on what day it is and what time of the year it is.

That depends on where the Moon is.
The Moon orbits the Earth but the apparent rising and setting of the Moon is caused by the Earth's rotation not the motion of the Moon (just like the apparent motion of the Sun). Therefore the time between two consecutive moonrises is about 24 hours. This 'about' is quite important. Because it is not exactly the same as the time between consecutive sunrises (read: because the Moon is moving) the relative positions of the Sun and Moon change so the time between sunrise and the next moonrise changes. (ps the relative positions of the Sun and Moon can be seen in the moons phase- hence I've used that below)
During the full Moon moonrise is about 12 hours after sunrise.
During the first quarter moonrise is 6 hour after.
Last Quarter: 18 hours after (6 hour before)
During the new moon they happen at about the same time.

If you were able to live on Jupiter could Ganymede cause a solar eclipse?

Yes. From Earth, you can see the shados of the four greater moons when they pass in front of Jupiter - this means that for a Jupiterian, the moon would eclipse the Sun. It is interesting to note that unlike on Earth, on Jupiter this is an almost daily phenomenon.

Are solar eclipse good or bad for the world?

Never, i repeat Never stare at a solar eclipse as it will burn the retina out of your head. that is where the moon blocks out the sun whereas a lunar eclipse is where the sun blocks out the moon and that is perfectly fine to look at!!

When is the next solar eclipse in Washington DC?

This information is incorrect. The 1959 total solar eclipse had totality go through the Northern half of Massachusetts, and Boston just caught the edge. Connecticut missed it. The last total solar eclipse visible as totality, from Connecticut was on January 24th, 1925. Totality covered all of the state, except the very northeast corner. New York City was JUST outside of the path of totality, but if New Yorkers traveled to the Bronx, they caught totality !!

How can you use solar eclipse in sentence?

  • A solar eclipse is a rare but beautiful occasion.
  • There are only a few places in the world where the solar eclipse will be visible.
  • Thousands of people watched the solar eclipse through specially provided pinhole glasses.

Which object's shadow travels across part of earth during a solar eclipse?

During a solar eclipse, it is the shadow of the moon that travels across part of the Earth as it passes between the Earth and the Sun. This creates the phenomenon where the moon blocks the sunlight from reaching the Earth's surface, causing a temporary darkness known as the eclipse.

Why you should not be afraid of an eclipse?

i am not afraid to die and you shouldnt be eithier. it is natural process that eventually happens. well we can be afraid of anything and not have a life,or have a lives with certain necessary.

What is an average duration of solar eclipse?

The average duration of a total solar eclipse is around 7.5 minutes, but it can vary from a few seconds to a maximum of about 7.5 minutes depending on the specific path and circumstances of the eclipse.

Why solar eclipse does not occur every time the moon revolves around earth?

The Earth orbits the Sun in a plane that we call the "ecliptic". If the Moon orbited the Earth in that same plane, we would experience eclipses every month. But the plane of the Moon's orbit is about 5 degrees tilted from the ecliptic, and so we only see eclipses at the "nodes" when the Moon's orbital plane crosses the ecliptic at the new or full moons.

What happens to block your view of the sun during a solar eclipse?

the moon moves between you and the sun blocking your view of the sun - but not entirely, viewing the eclipse without eye protection could damage your eyes possibly leading up vision loss or even blindness

Date of solar eclipse in 1979?

The solar eclipse of 1979 occurred on February 26, 1979. It was a total solar eclipse visible in parts of North America, specifically in the Pacific Northwest, northern Midwest, and Northeastern United States.

Is it harmful to go out during solar eclipse?

Yes, it is. However, it is NOT safe to ever look at the sun during a solar eclipse. The moon blocks enough of the direct sunlight so that the irises remain open, but this leaves the eyes vulnerable to radiation dangerous to them. Never observe a solar eclipse with the eyes unprotected. Lunar eclipses are safe to observe with the naked eye.

What phase of the moon is there a solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse only can occur at the time of the New Moon,

but doesn't occur at the large majority of them.

What causes a solar eclipse to be annular?

An annular solar eclipse happens when the moon is slightly too far from the earth for its shadow to block out the disk of the sun.

Thus during an annular solar eclipse there is an entire ring of sun visible round the black disk of the moon - a golden Annulus (being the Latin for "ring") of sun is seen - Hence Annular eclipse!

Why does it have to be new moon to be solar eclipse?

Because a solar eclipse occurs when the moon blocks the sun. The only way for this to happen is if the moon is between the sun and the earth. When the moon is between the sun and the earth, it is a new moon.

Where can a solar eclipse be seen from?

A total solar eclipse is visible from many places the best include places that are higher than others so that you can look more directly at it note that it is horrible for your eyes to look directly at a solar eclipse so try not to look directly at it!
