Rachel is a former friend of Melinda's but no longer acknowledges her since Melinda called the cops at the party. She tries reinventing herself freshman year by referring to herself as Rachelle. She also begins dating Andy Evans, but once she realizes the truth - that he raped Melinda - she dumps him at the prom.

Throughout most the book Melinda doesn't have any friends. She is friends with Heather, but it's not a real friendship because Melinda doesn't like her or talks to her and Heather is self centred and ditches Mel once she befriends the popular girls.

Melinda misses her old friends, like Rachel and Ivy, who stopped speaking to her because of the incident at the party.

Melinda stopped talking to her parents and her best friends after she was raped, Melinda also started self mutilating such as biting (or chewing) her lips and scraping her wrist with paper clips. Melinda also started to skip school.

When Melinda skips school the day her mom told her that she couldent drive Melinda to school Melinda is walking to school walking past the bakery and then Andy "Beast" Evans comes out and sees her she runs away and goes to the Mall to hang out there for a while.

The other time she skips is that she goes to the hospital and goes into the many different wards in the hospital

Melinda Sordino busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops,so her old friends won't talk to her ,and people she doesn't know hate her from a distance.the safest place to be is alone,inside her own head.but even that's not safe.because there's something she's trying not to think about.something she's trying not to let in, would blow her carefully constructed disguise to smithereens.and then she would have to speak the truth.

She was raped at the party and in shock and fear finds herself unable to say what happened to her when she calls the police, or tell anyone else. As a result, she no longer speaks at all and falls into a depression, although she eventually tells her former friend Rachel, to warn Rachel not to date her rapist. Rachel does not believe her at first. When her rapist attacks her at school and she fights back, the truth finally comes out and Melinda is able to speak again.
