The early TV screens were a large tube that was developed from round scopes as used in radar and other electronic devices. The TV Tube was made larger and a little more flat on the edges but the early ones appeared almost round. As technology improved, the TV screens became more and more square. So that is why most screens were square and therefore most TV cabinets were also square. MORE INFO TV screens show film and camera images which are rectangular in shape.
