Chronologically, You would need to start with THE LAND, then THE WELL. Her short story, "Song of the Trees" would be next and that leads into ROLL OF THUNDER, then LET THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN, and ROAD TO MEMPHIS. MISSISSIPPI BRIDGE and THE FRIENDSHIP are ancillary but occur around the time of ROLL OF THUNDER.

With the depression bearing down on her family and food in short supply, Cassie Logan isn't sure where her next meal will come from. But there is one thing that she knows will always be there-the whispering trees outside her window. Cassie's trees are a steady source of comfort to her, but they also happen to be worth a lot of money. When Mr. Andersen tries to force Big Ma to sell their valuable trees, Cassie can't just sit by and let it happen. She knows that her family needs the money, but something tells her that they need the trees just as much. The beloved heroine of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry enchants us again in this story of strength and pride.
The characters are:
Cassie Logan( the narrator)-The main character Cassie Logan is one of four children. She is the second child and the only girl, having three brothers. From the beginning, Cassie's character proves to be full of curiosity and appreciation for the world around her. When it comes to the forest of trees around her, the loss of them may affect her the most. She awakens to hear the trees sing to her showing her deep admiration for simple pleasures in life.
Stacey Logan- age 11, is the oldest of the four children. He protects and tries to shelter the other Logan children. His instinct to protect his siblings comes at a time when he is the oldest male at home while his father is away working on the railroad. Christopher-John, age 7, and Little Man, age 6, are the two younger brothers. Little Man can be very spunky but he doesn't like to get his clothes dirty and he makes that known clearly.
The father, David Logan- a hard-working family man. He lives and cares for his deceased father's land but also must work on the railroad to help support his family. The Logan family is one of very few black families who own and work their own land.
Mary Logan- the wife of David Logan and mother to the rambunctious yet inquisitive Logan children. She holds the family together along with Big Ma, spending most of her days worried about how her and her husband can provide for the family. Even doing without her own medicine, Mary is the protector and keeper of the Logan clan.
Caroline - the Grandmother, also known as Big Ma, and the mother of David Logan. Her and her husband had purchased the Logan family land and she still lives in the Logan family home with her son and family. Although her son cares for the land, she is still the owner of the Logan property until she signs it away to her son near the end of the story. She doesn't want the trees cut from her land but she has come to a point where she may not have a choice. Money is hard to come by and the Logan family is just scraping by.
Mr. Anderson - convinces Caroline Logan to allow him to cut down the trees on the Logan land. He knows that David is away working on the railroad and uses the opportunity to get what he wants.
Tom - works as a lumberman for Mr. Anderson but is only briefly mentioned, but it is painfully aware that Tom is distraught over cutting down the large trees.
After being sent to the chain gang, he is found guilty and receives death penalty.
