Also, they did not want a large military because it would eat up the budget. They were pro-France and supported a strong streamline government. If you were to live in the south or middle states at the time of the federalists vs democratic republicans, you would most likely have these beliefs.

Another note is that the D.R opposed Jays Treaty because is loosened ties with the French while they wanted to strengthen them.
