Does it take 7 years to digest a tootsie roll?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This sounds like the old "it takes 20 years to digest pepper" wives' tale. It's part fact and part fiction. It may take a longer time to actually digest many of the things we put into our bodies, but the digestion process runs everything through at the same rate. The acids in the stomach are very powerful, and liquify most food objects (if proper chewing takes place). Out from the stomach (usually 30 minutes, or so) food continues to be broken down as it travels through the intestines. It is nigh impossible to hold onto anything for 7 days, so it's really a "no-brainer"
