Starting in 1928 all silver certificates were printed with blue seals, not red seals. United States Notes used red ink. Each also had the bill's type shown in a banner across the top front above the portrait. Prior to 1928 there was no standard color coding so a bill's type couldn't be inferred from the seal color alone.

$5 silver certificates were printed with the dates 1886, 1891, 1896, 1899, 1923, 1934, and 1953.

$10 silver certificates were printed with the dates 1878, 1880, 1886, 1891, 1908, 1933, 1934, and 1953.

However those are what are called "series" dates; printing actually went on during many intervening years but the series date wasn't changed.

Current US bills weigh exactly one gram per note (bill). There are four hundred fifty-four grams (rounded to the nearest whole number) in one pound. Therefore, one pound of U.S. $100 bills would be worth about: $45,400!!!

All US bills have captions on them identifying the person whose portrait is on the front and the building or scene shown on the back. If you look through the bills in your wallet you'll find that the Treasury building is shown on the reverse of the $10 bill.

You should have your bill evaluated by a dealer or appraiser who handles error currency. Depending on its condition it could be worth $100 to $200.

The presses that print US bills have two counters on them that add the serial numbers. They're supposed to be kept in sync but sometimes one will get stuck, causing two different serial numbers to be printed on the same bill.

Of course there are several factors involved in price.

Many people would only give you face value...however errors ( if authentic ) will bring a premium above face value.

I have seen a 1969 one dollar bill ( vg + ) with different serial numbers with an asking price from a business of $365.00

Never just hand over this bill without a receipt, and as an added precaution I would use a printer so you have a visual record.

1988-A $1 bills were produced by an experimental "web-fed" press so they're very slightly different from most other $1s, leading to the belief that they're worth more. However, so many were made and the differences are so slight that they sell for essentially the same amount as 1988 bills with no series letter: essentially no extra value in circulated condition, and $2 to $3 uncirculated.

Please check your bill again and post a new, separate question. There are no 1998-dated $100 bills, and since 1969 all of them have carried greed Federal Reserve Seals. The last brown-seal $100 bills were printed in 1890.

Your bill is called a United States Note rather than a promissory note.

Given so many details, it's unfortunate that I have to tell you that there's no such bill.

This error can be worth $100 to $200 depending on the bill's condition.

It's called a "stuck counter" error, and occurs when the two counters that print the serial numbers get out of sync with each other. It's subtle and easy to miss.

All US $100 bills printed since 1969 have been Federal Reserve Notes with green seals. The last blue-seal $100 bills were dated 1918.

It's possible your bill was exposed to a chemical that changed the ink's color. Some strong detergents have been known to alter the blue/yellow balance in the ink used for the seal and serial numbers. You'd need to have it inspected in person to be sure, though.

There were no series letters on 1923 $1 United States Notes; you may be looking at a plate position indicator or some other "housekeeping" mark.

In any case this is a moderately valuable bill compared to its blue-seal silver certificate cousin. As of 06/2014 approximate prices are:

Serial Numbers

A bill's serial number is a counter and a security feature. In most cases it doesn't affect a bill's value or help to identify it. Some collectors specialize in bills with low serial numbers (e.g. 00000005) or unusual patterns (12344321) so these can bring above-average prices.
