When did the battle of Valley Forge start and end?

There was never a battle at Valley Forge, as mistakenly thought by a few people. However, because of the terrible winter and lack of provisions, over 2000 men died from disease and starvation. Scurvy was rampant since the soldiers were not furnished with the proper nutrients in their diet of firecakes.

Valley Forge is where the modern American Army was born. When the men marched into Valley Forge, after a mean defeat in Germantown and Whitemarsh, they were a concoction of farmers, laborers, lawyers, doctors, etc., who were not used to battle. However, they all had one goal, to defeat the British and save their country. Ben Franklin arranged for Baron Von Steuben of Prussia to come to Valley Forge and train George Washington's men to the proper ways of the soldiery. These brave men marched out of Valley Forge as real Soldiers, ready to do battle with the British once more.

Why was the weather at Valley Forge so difficult?

The weather was very cold that winter. In fact, the earth was going through a cooling period for at least 400 years and the 1700's were at the end of that time. Washington's troops camped at Valley Forge did face very cold conditions, but Park Service historians have proven that the men were in better condition than the myth tells. Each man had 3 pounds of flour and meat a day to eat. They did have shoes and clothing and they were fairly warm in the little cabins that were built. Washington was the master of the "spin" and didn't report to Congress just how well off the troops were. He was afraid that if they knew that they were doing so well his supply line would be cut, so he didn't report the facts as they were.

Who was involved in Valley Forge?

It was the winter quarters of the army. Washington and his officers were also there and at one point Martha Washington joined her husband. There is fallacy that the men were cold and starving at Valley Forge. Not true. The historians with the National Parks have found that they were well fed and warm, but Washington would not admit this to Congress. He knew that if they thought he was doing well the funds would dry up, so he "spun" the facts.

My brother just started going there and he got a scholarship. I'm pretty sure that it is about 25,000 dollars a year without a scholarship. What happened to the American troops at Valley Forge?

Valley Forge is surrounded in myth. We are told a story that the soldiers were freezing to death and nearly starved. That this was the worse winter in the Revolution and that men were so naked that they left bloody footprints in the snow. This is an exaggeration. Studies by the National Park Service and a team of archaeologist in the 1970's show that no one starved or froze. The researchers found that in December, January, and February that the 10,000 man army was supplied each month with a million pounds of flour and a million pounds of meat and fish. Broken down this means that each soldier was given more than 3 pounds of flour and more than 3 pounds of fish or meat per day. It seems that Washington overplayed the problems at the camp to obtain more aid from Congress and to fend off criticism that the army should spend the winter on the march. Washington was a shrewd man.

How long was George Washington and his army in Valley Forge for?

The plains of Valley Forge in Pennsylvania was the last place that the defeated American army could go. The enemy was in Philadelphia forcing the Americans to the plains, so in retreat Washington led his troops to Valley Forge for the winter. It was one of the worse winters in history with temperatures below zero and the Americans were without shoes, food and clothing. More than 3,000 died and were buried in unmarked graves. On December 23, 1777 Washington wrote ,"There are 2, 898 men in camp unfit for duty because they are barefooted and otherwise naked....." The men lived in 900 small huts built out of logs and clay with a dozen in a 14 by 16 foot hut. Many of the men were forced to sit up all night by the fires because of lack of blankets. The men went weeks without meat. Eventually supplies began to arrive and in June the men marched out the the valley to defeat the British at Monmouth, NJ. So, they were there from late Oct to June.
