If I recall correctly, the most straightforward way to get a diamond is to get into the haunted house and kill the ghosts/monsters/zombies in there.

Of course, to get into the haunted house, you need to find an old key.... which is hidden around the map. The first old key is hidden in the bottom right of the Drive-in theatre I think, but after that it's hidden in other places like alleys.

Once you get the old key... you should be able to enter the haunted mansion... at night...
