Yes. You do have to pay. Here's how it works. Go to the webkinz estore. Click on Upgrade to Webkinz Deluxe. There you'll be able to read about all the new features you can get when you become a deluxe member. First you choose your plan. You can choose between 3 month 15.00, per month, 6 month 25.00 per month, Annual, 45.00 per month and annual family 45.00 per month. Annual family you can choose when you have other webkinz members in the family. When you choose it you'll get deluxe member benefits for 5 webkinz accounts. Hope that answered your question. there are a few different ways you can look at the hourly events and play games on there (ones like balloon darts can have tokens in them if you pop them, or you can wait for a special holiday like Christmas and in your free gift from the webkinz people, there are usually tokens.

You don't necessarily go to your webkinz, but this is what you can do.
Click on the mazin' hamster tab in "stuff to do" the go to "My Hamsters". You should be able to see all the mazin' hamsters you've gotten and you can rename them.

Webkinz cannot die. Your pet will just get sick. You can tell if it is sick if your pet has a ice pack and/or thermometer in it's mouth. If your pet gets sick just take it to Dr. Quack. But i heard that after a year your account is cancelled and u have 2 make a new one. I guess it's webkinz's way of making money!
No the person above me is wrong about the account cancellation. What they do is it depends when you first buy a pet say on April 1st 2006 you buy and register your pet on the web site then you have a year to play on it and then on April 1st 2007 your account expires but you don't have to make another account all you do is go out and buy a new webkinz and you have another year to do the same thing: play!. I made an account in 2007 and I have been having my account for four years and I love it besides the fact that you have to keep buying the pets.
