Can you use a mobile phone in space?

Cell phones work by contacting a local station which covers a specific area (a 'cell') the range of these areas is quite small so 23 miles up (the edge of space) its pretty unlikely you will get a signal.

A satellite based phone would work sporadically as it needs to 'see' the satellite beam and the beam spreads in a cone from the satellite antenna to cover a 'footprint' on the earths surface - as you get closer to the satellite the beam gets narrower so unless you can arrange to be right under it you will have no contact.

You can't use a cell phone in space, because there are no cell poles or cell stations nearby, to catch your signal. You might be able to be able to use a satellite phone, depending a lot on your exact location: how high are you, and how high is the satellite? What is your angle to the satellite, and do you have a clear line of sight to the satellite?

If you get too high above the ground, you can't use a GPS.
