A couple of things made this mission a particularly interesting one.
The first time a man made object landed on (albeit slammed into) a comet.
The first time we could actually have a look inside a comets nucleus, instead of just flyby's.
Many experts had different opinions about what would really happen once the impact took place.
These are a few points of the top of my mind that I can think of that made the Deep Impact mission such an interesting one.

Deep Space One's mission target was to flyby an asteroid called
9969 Braille. This mission was only partially successfull so was
extended to include further engineering testing along with an
encounter with the comet Borrelly.
