Located right in the heart of Virginia, Richmond is the capital and one of the state's most important cities. It is known as the River City, as the James River runs right through the middle of Richmond. With just more than 200,000 residents, the city sits as the state's 3rd largest. What this mean visitors is that there's a lot to do if you are willing to get out and look for it.
Richmond is one of the oldest cities in the United States, as it draws its roots back to Jamestown and the original colonization of Virginia. In a practical sense, this has created a city that is very old and traditional in its layout. The grid was developed in the 1700s and remains unchanged. Additionally, people who come to Richmond need to take a new hours out of their time to take in some of the history of the area. There are impressive old houses and all sorts of old architecture right in the city's limits.
Richmond is a city that is dominated by the arts, which is probably due in large part to the well regarded Virginia Commonwealth University's art program. It helps to fuel the love for the arts in the city, which has the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, as well as the Byrd Theater. The Barksdale Theater is a definitely must-see if you are visiting, as it features many great shows during most times of the year. It is a not for profit theater that retains a bit of the old charm that used to come along with the city.
Richmond CenterStage opened in 2009 and is the updated home of performing arts in the city. That is a place to go to see musical performances, as well as any top-notch traveling acts that come to town.
If you are into basketball, you might check out a game played by either the Richmond University Spiders or the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams. Both teams have been to the NCAA Tournament over the last decade. The city also has minor league indoor football, a minor league hockey team, and a well-attended AA baseball team, too. If you are into tennis, the Arthur Ashe tennis facility is a nice thing to check out.
Richmond is a place where you can have a lot of fun, no matter what you are into. Whether visiting Jamestown or taking in a Spiders' game, you'll find fun in the capital.
