It took about 18 months from the time the Wall opened until the entire structure, minus the piece they left up as a museum, was removed. Among the many tasks accomplished were removing the two walls that surrounded no-man's land, tearing down all the guard towers, removing the spikes from the Spree River--the East Germans ran a row of spikes down the middle of the river, right along the East/West Berlin border, to keep people from swimming across--digging up all the land mines and unexploded ordnance, including quite a bit from World War II, and evaluating all the guard dogs to see if any could be retrained
