Stone keep castles were built because it wasn't going to burn or rot like Motte and Bailey castles would. Also, it would keep it the castle standing for a long amount of time.Because the Motte and Bailey castles would just burn the stone keep castles were a brilliant idea. They lasted longer, they were better defence though the only down side was that they took a lot longer to build. The wooden Motte and Bailey castles only took a week or two but the stone castles would take months.

Square keep castle are quite strong castles, as for this they built lots of them for defence the stronger the castle the better defence because square castles have round towers in each corner the pressure spreads every where and not in one place so the castle does not collapse.

To replace Motte and bailey castles. Motte and Bailey castles were wood castles built on a man made mound of earth (motte) with a section around the motte for the staff to live in (the bailey). Motte and bailey castles were only temporary and they were quick to build. They weren't very good in defence because they could burn - they were made of wood. Stone keep castles took months, maybe even years, to build but they were untouchable compared to the motte and baileys. Also, because they were made of stone, they lasted a long time. Most of the stone keep castles that are standing today were built in the medieval period.

Square castles were mostly built by the Saxons, who invaded Britain a few centuries before the Viking era. The square shaped castles and towers were an architectural design that was created to make the castles stronger and more robust if anyone was attacking their stronghold. However, the Normans who conquered England into a full Empire in 1066, (his was led by William the Conqueror, first official king of Englan), they build less efficient triangular based buildings. These were far more easy to destroy than the Saxon design.

Stone keep castles were made to 'keep' things inside. Say your money, treasures, or family-if you loved them! The hill that a keep stands on is called a motte, (pronounced Mott), and the outside castle is called the bailey. Search up pictues of castle keps and you'll soon know. So keep by name, keep by nature.

Keeps were normally only used if enemys attacked.

there are a few reasons why stone castles were better than motte and bailey castles but in some aspects they were not. but they were better mainly because they were bigger and stronger and could not be set on fire. but they took a long time to build so they were not the quickest to build but other than that they were a lot better

they were more stronger because they were built with stone so it would be harder to knock down the castle and that it was more stable than the motte and bailey castle. But also they take alot off time to build because unlike the motte and bailey castle where you can find all the equipment lying around the stone castle would be more harder to build because you would first have to find the stone or buy the stone from abroad then carve the stone in to bricks then build it into a castle shape which would take alot of time, patience and skill. The structure of the castle is built very cleverly by who it was made up by because all off the protection is outside plus it is made out stone so it would be strong the inside you stay safe. For alerts of enemys you can put soldiers on the big pillar thingys outside to stay out on a look out. anothe bad feature is that if you get the wrong type of stone then that might lead to a several number of problems.

Willam started building Stone Keep castles because the were stronger, and better than the Motte and Bailey. They also were grander which gave more influence over William's people, Concentric Castles came after them they were also known as A castle within a Castle. They were good because they had different levels of walls so that the archers can have double fire.

Thanks!

When the Normans invaded England (Battle of Hastings 1066) they constructed castles of raised earthworks and walls of wood. Later, when the natives were more subdued, the Normans began to construct castles of more permanent stone.

stone keep castles are made of stone and the walls were 2.5m thick. this meant that it was incredibly hard to knock down or burn and was also great protection from enemies

Because they were previously made of wood and so they made them from stone so they would be less flammable and harder to get through.

In what time period were Stone Keep Castles built?

Stone or square keep castles were first built in Medieval England by William the Conqueror. Stone keep castles were the natural extension of motte and bailey castles. Motte and bailey castles were only temporary features (though many mottes exist to this day) while stone keep castles were built to last.
