After the Japanese surrender of Singapore in September 1945, the British regained control of its colony. The British Military Administration was formed to govern Singapore until March 1946. In April 1946, Singapore became a separate and distinct Crown Colony from Malaya. It was headed by a Governor and executive and legislative councils were established by July 1947. Throughout the 1950s, Singapore gained more and more self-governance until it joined Malaysia in the 1960s.
