For many years in the early to mid-1800s, America and Britain agreed upon "joint occupancy" of the Oregon Territory. America claimed land all the way up to the 54040' while Britain claimed land as far south as the 420 .
President Polk was elected and he encouraged Manifest Destiny, stating that America's destiny included as much land gain as possible. Part of that was the entire Oregon territory. There were threats of war over the land. (Common slogan: Fifty-four Forty or fight!)
Moderation won out over calls for war and the 49th parallel was agreed to as the place of the divide, America getting all land south and the UK, all land north in the Oregon Treaty.
It is a Treaty betwee Great Britain and the US that establishes the border between Canada and the US in what was then called the Oregon Territory.
Polk did not really want to fight Britain. Instead, in 1846, he agreed to a compromise. Oregon was divided at latitude 49°N. Britain got the lands north of the line, and the United States got the lands south of the line.
The 42° N latitude creates Oregon's southern border. The 45° N latitude runs just a little north of the state capitol of Salem Oregon. The 46° 18' N latitude creates Oregon's most northern border.
The dispute over the northern boundary of the U.S. claim to the Oregon Territory was was settled in the Treaty of Oregon of 1846, during the presidency of James K. Polk. The treaty established the boundary between British Canada and the U.S. at 49-degrees latitude. -- Contributed by Ray Kovach, Chicago, IL

54-40 ( 54 degrees- 50 minutes) referred to the line of latitude that the US wanted as the northern border of the Oregon Territory . The slogan threatened Britain with war if this demand was not met. ( One Polk got into office, he settled for less.)
It was in the 1800's. I learned about it 2 or 1 month ago. They bought it after Meriwether Lewis and William Clark discovered the Oregon Country. It included Idaho, Oregon[of course], Part of Montana, and Washington. -In 1819, Oregon was claimed by four nations-Russia, Spain, Great Britain and the United States. Spain was first to drop out of the claim, then Russia agreed to limit it's claim to the 54 degree 40' parallel of latitude, which is today's southern border of Alaska. In 1825, Britain and the United States agreed to a peaceful "joint occupation" of Oregon. In 1846, after a change in government, the United States made a treaty with Great Britain. They agreed to split Oregon Country in half, on the 49th parallel, which is now the northern border of Washington, Idaho, and Montana.
