There are beaches in Tampa. There is Picnic Island in south Tampa. It is down near MacDill Air Force Base. They have canoe trails, a fishing pier, two playgrounds, restrooms, grills, picnic tables, and gazebos. If you are in town during the early parts of May, you can watch the Blue Angels practicing for the annual airshow from the south point of the beach.

If you are in the military, there is a beach for the GI's along with their friends and family on the south side of MacDill Air Force Base. Due to restricted security, you must go through the military police at the Dale Mabry Hw. gates with a someone that has a valid military ID.

There is also Cypress Point. It is located near West Shore and International malls. There are gazebos, a small boardwalk, and some picnic tables. Several years ago the area was heavily wooded. It required pick up trucks and Jeeps to get back to the beach, but they have been doing a good deal of work and have cleared the area. The restroom facilities have not been put in as of yet, but there are Port-a-lets.

Both of these beaches are nearby the Gandy Bridge. Gandy will take you over to Pinellas county. Pinellas is home to some of the larger and more populated beaches such as St. Petersburg. It is about a 20 minute drive over the bridge.
