Lighter colors dominate the wardrobe to keep from drawing excessive heat. In casual situations, jeans and T-shirts are common, as are informal button-down shirts.

Misconceptions

• It is a mistake to believe that the flowery dresses sold to the tourist in El Salvador are actually worn by women in their daily affairs. In Mexico, the majority of people do not wear sombreros and ponchos and ride on a donkey. So too in El Salvador, the traditional attire is part of the history and celebration of the culture but not a daily part of the Salvadorans' lifestyle.
